Chandigarh lifts Sub-junior Hockey title | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 17: Chandigarh Olympic Association today lifted the Vth Sub Junior Boys' National Hockey (Division-B) Championship outplaying Hockey Patiala 6-4 in the title clash that took place at K K Hakhu Stadium, here today. In the final, it was Sanjay's spectacular hat-trick that guided Chandigarh to take home the title trophy. To begin with, on a penalty corner earned in the very second minute of the match, Sanjay took the shot and hit it hard into the goal-box. Sabjodh Singh extended the lead in the fifth minute when he sneaked into opponent's half and scored a brilliant goal. After conceding two goals, Patiala counter attacked on Chandigarh's half in the 18th minute as Prateek Sharma led the attack from the front. Chandigarh charged back and earned another penalty corner in 24th minute, which was perfectly converted by Jaspreet Singh. His team-mate Sanjay increased the lead by 4-1, when he entered the D with his surprising speed and scored another spectacular goal. Patiala kept-on attacking on their opponents and tried to create maximum opportunities to score goals. They managed to earn a penalty stroke in 41st minute, which was effectively converted by Harinder Singh for their second goal. However in the 45th minute, Chandigarh earned another penalty corner and Mandeep converted it with his superb skills. His team-mate Sanjay stroke back again in the 50th minute and scored the 6th goal for his team. Trailing by 2-6, Patiala pushed themselves harder to level the score-line and they continued attacking game. In 52nd minute, they earned a penalty stroke, which was converted by the specialist Harinder with an ease. After a nail-biting tussle in the last minutes, they earned a penalty corner in the 66th minute, which was converted by Prince to score their fourth goal. With the marvellous team-work and aggressive strategies, Chandigarh defeated Hockey Patiala by 6-4 and won the championship. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh bagged the third place after they beat Dadar and Nagar Haveli via tie-breaker in a well contested hardliner. In the stipulated time the match ended in a 2-2 draw, however, in the tie breaker, Madhay Pradesh proved to be better side to emerge 5-3 winner. In the final and valedictory function, Minister for Social Welfare and Forests, Bali Bhagat was chief guest who gave away the winners and runners up trophies as also other individual prizes. He appreciated Hockey J&K for hosting the mega event in the Winter Capital. Minister was accompanied by working president of Hockey J&K, ADGP (Armed), S M Sahai and other office bearers and senior officers of the J&K Police and representatives from Hockey India. |
