Cong decries Govt's refusal to exempt tax on heli-services | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 10: Criticizing the PDP-BJP coalition governments' refusal to revoke the order imposing service tax on chopper service for the pilgrims of Mata Vaishno Devi shrine and other religious destinations, the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) termed it as a most unfortunate decision aimed at hurting the religious sentiments of crores of people in this country. Reacting to the statement in the state legislature wherein the government has denied any move to withdraw the 12.5% service tax imposed by the government on September 2 last, the Congress has taken strong exception to the indifferent attitude of the present dispensation and blamed it of being insensitive to the religious sentiments of crores of people of the country, as over one crore pilgrims visit the Vaishno Devi and other religious shrines in the state annually. In a statement Chief Spokesman of PCC, Ravinder Sharma said that Congress legislators had walked out on the very first day of the current session when the adjournment motion brought over this issue was not taken up for discussion. He regretted that the present coalition which comprises of half of its strength from BJP has imposed tax on the pilgrims instead of granting subsidy to the yatris. The BJP, which claims to the equal partner, having an equal numerical strength of its legislators in the government, has utterly failed to get the order withdrawn, despite protests from nook and corner of this country over the worst kind of approach towards the pilgrims, which reminds people about 'Jaziya Tax'. Congress has warned the government over its insensitive approach to the issues of religious sentiments and asked BJP to clarify its stand now, after the refusal of its coalition government to withdraw this tax, least caring for BJP or the religious sentiments of people.
