Rashid defends beef party, says committed no wrong | | | ET Report JAMMU, Oct 10: Er Rashid, who is being backed to the hilt by all the Kashmiri political parties, religious class, separatist outfits and some civil society members as well as by certain elements in the civil and police establishments, on Friday shamelessly defended the beef party he hosted on October 7 at the official MLA Hostel, Srinagar, and reiterated that he committed no wrong. Notwithstanding the fact that the Supreme Court of India on October 6 stayed for two months the order of the Jammu Bench of the State High Court that directed the State Police to implement in letter and spirit Sections 298 A, B, C and D, these sections of the Ranbir Dand Bidhi are very much intact and it is the duty of the State Government to enforce them as long as they are on the statute book. That Rashid enjoyed the backing of certain important quarters could be seen from the fact that he has been roaming free even after committing a serious offence. Leave aside the Supreme Court order on the issue, which has been questioned by many legal luminaries, the fact remains that Rashid committed an act of blasphemy at a public place with the motive of hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus who worship cow as mother goddess. He committed the unpardonable offence and then went scot free because neither the authorities in the State nor the BJP-led NDA Government rose to the occasion to punish the guilty and establish the rule of law in the State. The worst was the role of the over 30 BJP MLAs and MLCs, including Ministers, who watched the condemnable act as mute spectators. What a couple of BJP legislators did in the Assembly on Thursday was no more than a drama staged to divert the people's attention away from the sins the BJP had been committing since March 1, when it murdered its ideology to become part of the anti-Jammu and anti-minority regime. Had they been sincere to the Jammu cause, they would have disturbed the beef party held at the MLA Hostel. That they chose the Assembly to do what they did established that they were only interested in creating a scene and creating an impression that they were for the enforcement of section 298 A, B, C and D. Again, that the BJP was with the Kashmiri leadership on the issue could be further seen from the fact that the party allowed PDP-controlled Law Ministry to fire the innocent Additional Advocate General and Deputy Advocate General, both RSS-BJP men. The RSS-BJP combine has left their own men in the lurch. The irony is that belligerent Rashid has defended his most condemnable act. "Shamefully BJP and few pseudo intellectuals are very busy on national media to convince masses that whatsoever happened in J&K Assembly with Er Rashid was his own fault as he should not have hosted beef party," he also said. What he said not only exposed the BJP and the administration, but also established that he and others of his ilk would go on violating the laws regarding cow slaughtering and beef eating. The situation is grave. The Jammu people are feeling suffocated. But more than that, things in Jammu could assume alarming proportions as the people of the region have lost faith in all the political parties and as many concerned citizens are toying with a idea of a purely Jammu-based, Jammu and nation-centric regional party. The truth is that the political class has become almost untouchable in Jammu. |
