Another bandh in Jammu humiliates BJP
10/11/2015 12:32:36 AM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 10: The abandoned, humiliated, insulted, abused and outraged people of Jammu on Saturday again observed bandh to register their emphatic protest against the BJP which failed to deliver its promise that it will not allow anyone to break the laws regarding slaughter of cow and beef eating in the State and that it will ensure that those found guilty of violating these laws were brought to book. The call for shutdown was given by the Jammu & Kashmir National Panthers Party and supported by several social and political groups as well as Jammu & Kashmir High Court Bar Association, Jammu, and Jammu Lawyers Forum.
Earlier on April 24, May 27 and from July 31-August 5, the people across Jammu region had observed bandh against the BJP. In between, the people of Jammu had also organized three massive anti-BJP protest marches and rallies and the issue that had provoked political explosions in Jammu region was the transfer of the sanctioned AIIMS from Jammu to Kashmir. The April 24 bandh was the first ever bandh against the BJP and its misdeeds and the manner in which the BJP broke its solemn promises made in its Vision Document and during the election campaign. The situation in Jammu between April and August 5 was such that no BJP Minister or MP or MLA or MLC could venture out of his residence without foolproof security cover.
The call for bandh on Saturday was given to protest the manner in which Langate MLA, Er Rashid violated the laws on cow slaughtering, sale of beef and beef eating and hosted beef party inside the MLA hostel. As was expected, the call for bandh evoked a tremendous response. There was no coercion. The people observed peaceful bandh out of conviction to warn the "anti-peace" forces that they would not tolerate interference in their religious affairs and defeat with full might all of their nefarious designs aimed at creating trouble in the State.
The bandh against the political class comprising those at the helm of affairs and opposition parties like NC and Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPI-M) was an impressive affair. The shutdown affected normal life in Jammu. Most of the shops, educational institutions, public transport and other businesses remained closed in and around Jammu city. Attendance in banks, post offices and Government offices was also thin because of non-availability of public transport in the city.
The activists of the Panthers Party, who gathered at Press Club, carried out an impressive protest march. The police, as was expected, didn't allow them to carry out protests on roads like the Residency Road and other communally-sensitive areas of the city. At a number of places the Panthers Party activists raised anti-BJP slogans and charged the party with ditching the people of Jammu region. They attacked BJP more than PDP and other Kashmir-based and Valley-centric parties and stated that BJP was the real culprit.
"BJP has sold out people of Jammu region. It has bartered national interests for power. It has ditched the Dogra youth. It is a party to the imposition of Jazya Tax on the religious places and shrines like Mata Vaishno Devi. It has ditched the refugees from Pakistan. It has ditched and punished the Additional Advocate General and Deputy Advocate General. How could a party that could sacrifice its law officers take care of the constituency that voted it to power? BJP has not only harmed the general civil, political and economic rights and interests of the people of Jammu region, but has also ditched and humiliated its own constituency to fulfill its lust for power," they said while raising anti-BJP slogans. They threatened the BJP that it would face serious political consequences in the region if its leadership and Ministers continued to play with the religious sentiments and jeopardize their political and economic interests in the manner it did till date.
Significantly, on Friday, the Congress had organized a very strong protest against the BJP and exposed its double-speak and what it called the BJP's politics of bluff and deceit. So much so, they held protest in front of BJP headquarters at Kachi Chawni with some of them trying to enter the Prem Nath Dogra Bhawan. They also levelled charges against BJP similar to the charges the Panthers Party levelled today.
The nature and magnitude of the today's bandh once again established that the BJP has lost the people's confidence. Political observers opine that "BJP, which has got power for the first and last time in Jammu & Kashmir, is in a self-destruction mode" and that "it is only ensuring its political decimation in the region for reasons not really understandable".
