Dearth of Registrars hits GDC Srinagar, thanks to inept principal | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 10: The dearth of Senior Residents (Registrars) at Government Dental College (GDC) and Hospital Srinagar is directly affecting the patient healthcare in this lone dental hospital of Kashmir valley. As per information available with Early Times, there are 18 sanctioned posts of Registrars in the GDC. There are eight separate departments to run the GDC. These departments include Orthodontia, Periodontia, Oral Medicine and Radiology, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Conservative Dentistry, Prosthodontia, Community Dentistry, Oral Pathology, and Dental Materials. Even if there are has just three Registrars in each department, it means there should be 24 posts available. But irony is that even 18 Registrars are not assigned the task to work in the hospital, and this according to the doctors is an administrative failure for which the principal Dr Reyaz Farooq is totally responsible. "While PG students in Government Medical College Srinagar are undertaking their final year exam, the posts of Registrars are advertised by the GMC principal just to save their time and career. This however doesn't happen with PG students from the GDC. Even as we passed the PG exam many months ago, the GDC authorities are not bothered about our career. That is why they do not advertise the posts," said an aggrieved dental surgeon. Notably, early this year the GDC principal failed to conduct the exams for Master's of Dental Sciences (MDS) students for several months. It was an Early Times report which forced the principal to conduct these exams. The students had been alleging that their career was at stake, and Early Times had carried a detailed story on March 5, 2015. The GDC has remained in news in the past as well, as the principal Dr Reyaz was indicted by the State Vigilance Organisation (SVO) for causing loss of Rs 50 lakh to the state exchequer. He had purchased several dental equipments on exorbitant rates from some suppliers. But the government is yet to initiate action against the tainted principal though an FIR stands registered against him. The SVO, according to sources, has forwarded Dr Reyaz's case to the General Administration Department (GAD) to seek sanction for prosecution under J&K Prevention of Corruption Act. Sources at the GAD said the sanction may be given very soon as the matter was discussed at a high level recently. |
