Beef row: Jammu observes 'shutdown', normal life thrown out of gear | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 10: Normal life in Jammu remained affected on Saturday in response to shutdown called by Jammu Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) against sacrilege act in Chenani and a beef party hosted by the independent MLA Er Rashid in Srinagar. Majority of shops, educational institutes, public transport and other businesses remained closed in Jammu city on Saturday because of a Jammu Bandh called by the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) supported by various religious and social organisations, including Bar Association Jammu (BAJ), against cow slaughter in Chenani of Udhampur district and hosting of a beef party by independent legislator Engineer Rashid earlier this week in Srinagar. Barring three-wheelers, and private transport plied on city roads which presented a deserted look in absence of the commercial public transport. Earlier in the morning, protestors led by Panthers Party Chairman Harsh Dev Singh and State President Balwant Singh Mankotia, raising slogans against PDP-BJP government, took out a rally in winter capital of state -Jammu to enforce bandh. The rally started from outside the Press Club of Jammu and passing through old city enforced the bandh. Meanwhile adequate deployment of Police was made across the region while Panthers Party leaders were also detained as preventive measure. Addressing the protestors, State President JKNPP Balwant Singh Mankotia said, "Till date no action has been taken yet against the MLA Rashid for hosting the beef party inside the government premises." Demanding FIR against him (Er Rashid) for this act, Mankotia said, "Law makers should not break the law, he should be punished for his attempt to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of the state." "Jammu and Kashmir is an example of brotherhood and harmony and such elements should not be spared, he said further appealing to the civil society to maintain communal harmony and be aware of such elements. Pertinently for the last three days, there has been a protest shutdown in Chenani, Udhampur and Reasi towns of Jammu region. "The bandh remained totally peaceful in the district, there was no untoward incident reported in any part of Jammu," Senior Superintendent of Police Jammu Uttam Chand told media persons. He said elaborate security arrangements were made to thwart any untoward incident during the day-long Jammu bandh. Meanwhile tension gripped in the Udhampur and its adjoining area after the report of another sacrilegious act, leading to strong public protest, bandh today. However district administration and police acting promptly clarified the situation that the animal died of natural death. The trouble started after the locals noticed the sacrilegious act committed by some anti-social elements in the fields Trishi Gandala area of Udhampur. Soon after the news spread, the police party from Udhampur rushed to the spot after coming to know about the incident. Later Addl Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Udhampur Angrez Singh Rana along with Addl SP Mohan Lal Kaith held a press conference at Udhampur along with owner of bovine to clarify the alleged bovine killing incident ruling out any foul play. "The owner of cow identified as one Jia Lal Atri son of Munshi Ram Ramdasi resident of Village Sambal voluntarily came forward and said that the animal died few days back and disposed it off through a sweeper namely Dulla on payment of Rs 3500 however same was disposed in open with fault on part of later, said ASP Udhampur. Meanwhile the district administration has appealed the people to maintain calm and restraint and not to get driven by rumours spread on social media or otherwise. Meantime Deputy Commissioner (DC) Udhampur Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary has reiterated the seriousness of law enforcement authorities for ensuring strict action against persons taking law into their hand, and warned the rumour mongers to restrain from playing with fire. He has issued instructions to police for formulating dossiers of rumour mongers to be booked under Public Safety Act. Reports from Sunderbani said that people of Sunderbani in response to Jammu bandh call against 'sacrilege act' observed shutdown. The Sunderbani town observed complete bandh only few visitors were seen in city market which wore a deserted look. Meanwhile social and political organizations held demonstration against the govt. and demands of arrest of MLA Er Rashid. Demanding stern action against the MLA Rashid, state vice president Bajrang Dal Aryan Sharma and president Yuva Morcha Sanjay Kumar said that Rashid had hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community across the globe and Hindu community will never tolerate this kind of anti Community activity. RSS activist Kishore Kumar and president Gou Raksha Dal Vipan Kumar demanded immediate arrest of MLA Rashid and warned state government of intensified protests across the state. Yet in another protest at Roopnagar in Jammu, Kranti Dal demonstrated against the "beef party" hosted by MLA langate Er Abdul Rashid. Criticizing MLA Rashid for playing with the sentiments of the minority community in J&K, Kranti Dal activists burnt his effigy to register their resentment. "We have extended our support to the strike call as the issue is related to the religious sentiments of the Hindu community across the globe," Pritam Sharma, State president Kranti Dal said. He also criticized the State Government for its alleged failure to strictly impose the law that prohibits the slaughter and sale of beef in the state. Protesters also demanded investigation of carcasses of three bovine animals in Chenani and strong action against the guilty. |
