APSCC all set to carry out state wide agitation | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Oct 15: Alleging apathy from the people at helm All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) today threatened of carrying out a state wide agitation against the state government. The Committee demanded extension of National Minority Act to the state so that Sikhs are classified as a minority community. Addressing a press conference here, APSCC Chairman Jagmohan Singh Raina said that although the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government in the state is more than seven months old but still no action has been taken so that the issues confronting the Sikh community are taken up and then solved. "We have decided to carry out agitation against the state government across the length and breadth of the state. The APSCC chairman claimed that many of the PDP candidates won due to the votes polled by the Sikhs in these constituencies. He said that legislators of Amira Kadal, Tral, Baramulla and some other constituencies in the state owe their success to the votes of Sikhs adding still then their issues continue to remain unaddressed. The APSCC chairman said that despite writing letters to chief minister and other ministers the government did not deem it fit to solve the problems of Sikh community. He said the APSCC had set a deadline of 20 days for the government to address the issues of the community. "As part of our agitation programme we will carry out dharna in Srinagar, Jammu and other districts of the state. The APSCC chairman said that they many a times tried to meet the chief minister but all these attempts have gone vain as no meeting could take place. He said that although former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh recommended to former state government to extend National Minority Act to the state, but there was no response from the people at helm at that point of time. "Besides the extension of Minority Act in the state we have been raising issues like filling up of vacant posts of Punjabi teachers and lecturers in the schools and colleges of the state. At the same time there is dire need of starting the Punjabi department at the University of Kashmir. This would lead to the promotion of Punjabi language in the state since the language is one of the recognized languages of the state," said Raina. |
