J&K BJP not keen on declaring Oct 26 a holiday
Belying Jammu's hope
10/15/2015 11:48:24 PM
Early Times Report
jammu, Oct 15: The State unit of the BJP, which has been "betraying" the people of Jammu province "in a most brazen manner" since more than seven months now and has become a "tool in the hands of anti-Jammu" Kashmiri leadership, is unlikely to come up to the expectation of its constituency which wants the State Government to declare October 26 a State holiday to appreciate the contribution of Maharaja Hari Singh, who 68 years ago on this historic day acceded the State with India. The accession of J&K to India was a great event considering the fact that Pakistan and its agents in Kashmir had then tried to annex the entire State of J&K through war. Had he not acceded his State to India on October 26, 1947, the story of the State today would have been totally different. It is a different story that Jawaharlal Nehru did everything to defeat the nationalist moves of Maharaja Hari Singh, but failed to keep J&K out of India.
Before coming into power in the State, the BJP used to urge the J&K Government to declare October 26 as a State holiday, but failed because it was a marginal outfit, as also because the State Government was controlled by Kashmiri leadership, which considered Maharaja Hari Singh "oppressive" and "anti-Kashmiri Muslims", which was not true. (Maharaja Hari Singh was one of the most progressive rulers any princely State ever produced in the country. He was as democrat as liberal as well as a ruler who believed in the principle of justice and equity and treated all communities alike. Besides, he was a nationalist of nationalists and patriot of patriots, who never minced words and had his own views on Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru."
The belief that the BJP is unlikely to persuade its coalition partner to meet the age-old demand of the proud Dogras of Jammu province has stemmed from the two statements made recently by the Deputy Chief Minister, Nirmal Singh, and BJP State general secretary, Narinder Singh.
When asked if he would persuade his coalition partner to declare October 26 as a State holiday, Nirmal Singh did endorse the demand, but, at the same time, he said that the BJP is now part of the State Government and that he would try to evolve consensus on the issue. "The BJP has been celebrating Accession Day in the State while sitting in Opposition. Now we are running an alliance Government I will try my level best to build a consensus on the issue," he was quoted as saying. In a way, he gave a hint that the BJP will not make it a bigger issue. His statement that "I will try my level best to build a consensus on the issue" should not suggest anything else. It should only suggest that the today's BJP is not that BJP the people of Jammu province voted for in large numbers and with great enthusiasm.
The belief that the BJP might betray the people of Jammu province yet again got further strengthened when BJP general secretary Narinder Singh virtually ruled out the possibility of October 26 being declared as a State holiday. "The BJP has been celebrating October 26 as Accession day and this year too we are planning to organize a gala event to mark the historic day…I personally don't subscribe to the view point of declaring a holiday on October 26," Narinder Singh was quoted as saying.
But what the Deputy Chief Minister and BJP general secretary reportedly said was not altogether unexpected. They said what the agenda of alliance allowed them to say. Remember, the agenda of alliance doesn't really consider J&K an integral part of India. Nor does it say that India is the only stakeholder in J&K. It says Pakistan and Hurriyat leaders are also stakeholders.
