| 1596 doctor posts lying vacant in JK | | ‘State has one doctor for 4367 persons’ | | Asif Iqbal Naik

Jammu, Oct 15: There are 4452 sanctioned posts of doctors in the state and the doctor patient ratio is 1: 4367.
If the government fills all the posts, even then there will be one doctor available for 2808 people which is quite high a ratio for a state like J&K having population of approximately 1.25 crores spread over 22 districts, an expert said.
While comparing the two Divisions of the state, against the sanctioned strength of 2015 doctors, Jammu Division had 1137 doctors in position while 878 posts of doctors are lying vacant.
In Jammu Division, Poonch district tops the list with 139 posts of doctors lying vacant and out of 205 sanctioned posts of doctors, only 66 doctors are available in the district. Similarly out of 243 sanctioned posts of doctors, Rajouri district has 137 posts vacant, followed by Doda where 129 posts are lying vacant out of 211 sanctioned posts, Kathua district has 125 posts of doctors vacant out of 268 sanctioned posts, Udhampur district has 88 posts of doctors vacant out of 187 sanctioned posts, Ramban district has 74 posts of doctors vacant against 120 sanctioned posts, Reasi district has 62 posts of doctors vacant out of 103 sanctioned posts, Kishtwar district had 58 posts of doctors vacant against sanctioned strength of 99, Samba district has 45 posts of doctors vacant against sanctioned strength of 125 and Jammu district featured at the bottom of the list with 24 vacant post of doctors against the sanctioned strength of 454 posts.
In Kashmir division including two districts of Leh and Kargil, there are 2437 sanctioned post of doctors and against these posts only 1719 doctors are available while 718 posts of doctors are lying vacant in the division. Kupwara district of Kashmir tops the list with 143 posts of doctors lying vacant against sanctioned strength of 284 posts followed by Bharamulla district with 119 posts of doctors lying vacant against the sanctioned strength of 366 posts of doctors, Kargil district has 76 vacant posts of doctors against 145 sanctioned posts, Pulwama has 72 vacant posts of doctors against 236 sanctioned posts, Budgam has 71 vacant posts of doctors against 330 sanctioned posts, Anantnag district has 63 vacant posts of doctors against sanctioned strength of 279, Kulgam has 60 vacant posts of doctors against sanctioned strength of 164 posts, Leh district has 59 vacant posts of doctors against sanctioned strength of 136 posts, Bandipora has 41 vacant posts of doctors against sanctioned strength of 105 posts, Shopian has 20 vacant posts of doctors against sanctioned strength of 76 posts, Ghanderbal district has lowest number of vacant posts of doctors with 19 posts of doctors are lying vacant in the district against the sanctioned strength of 122 posts of doctors while Srinagar is the only district in the state where 25 doctors are available in addition to the sanctioned strength. In Srinagar against sanctioned strength of 194, there are 219 doctors available in the and thus 25 doctors are surplus. |
