Early Times Report

JAMMU, Oct 15: With Traffic police and administration sleeping over the issue huge traffic jams over city roads has been a common feature compounding the problems of daily commuters, school going children and office goers.
There is hardly any road in the City and its outskirts on which huge traffic jams are not witnessed at present. Whether it is canal road, Talab Tillo road, Akhnoor road, Janipur -Bantalab road or interior city roads people have to witness the traffic jams of huge duration.
The problem worsens after the start of marriage and festival season. It can take a critical turn after the Darbar move when thousands of more vehicles are added to the city traffic.
According to sources the main cause of the increasing traffic mess in Jammu ahs been lack of long term policy by the State Government. The Government over the years has failed to conceive a long term policy to tackle the increasing traffic rush in Jammu city. The condition of road has not changed for last over four decades barring a few. The city roads are in dilapidated condition which have also been encroached by the vendors and Rehari, Phari wallas, sources added.
Sources said failure of the Jammu Municipal authorities, police and Traffic police to remove the encroachments from the city roads ahs been one of the causes of the traffic jams in the city.
A huge traffic jam was witnessed in parade opposite Stadium on the road form Parade touching Brig Rajinder Singh Chowk via Fly Over after the army truck got stuck in middle of the road today. The authorities failed to restore the traffic on this busy road for half an hour and there was huge jam from parade to Brig Rajinder Singh Chowk. The traffic jams are witnessed at Janipur Chowk and other crossings on this road due to mismanagement. No member of Traffic Police or district police is seen on the road to regulate the traffic. Same is position near BSF Paloura where the traffic jams of long duration are witnessed daily due to mushrooming of Private schools and marriage halls in the vicinity. The failure of the authorities to widen the Akhnoor road and construct fly overs near crossings has been another cause of the traffic jam in these locations. Sources said the dilapidated condition of roads is also one of the cause of traffic mess in the city. Though the Government is in office for last seven months now it has failed to take the renovation of roads in hand on war footing basis. Sources said the Government should frame a concrete policy to overcome increasing traffic jams in the city and its outskirts. Besides widening the roads and removing the encroachments on them, it should construct flyovers on crossings to avoid the traffic jams over there.
