World Anaesthesia Day : How aware are we | | Dr Jyoti Sakral | 10/15/2015 11:32:11 PM |
| 16th of October 1846, "was the day when pain died". Now celebrated as World Anaesthesia Day, it aims to create an awareness regarding benefits of anaesthesia. World Anaesthesia day commemorates the first successful demonstration of ether anaesthesia on October 16, 1846. This ranks as one of the most significant event in the history of medicine that took place at the Massachusetts General Hospital, home to the Harvard School of Medicine. The discovery made it possible for the patients to obtain the benefits of surgical treatment without undergoing the ordeal of suffering from pain associated with the operation. Anaesthetist is the person who administers anaesthesia and its role starts not only when the patient is being operated but in fact much before and beyond that. Today anaesthesia is not there just to accessorize surgery which is a "Myth". However, the truth is that there is very little awareness among public about this mystical and magical branch of medical science. Once the patient is diagnosed to be operated for whatever reasons, the anaesthesia and the anaesthetist start playing its role. For general masses an anaesthetist doesn't exist and if it exists it is inseparable from surgeon, as they never have a chance to meet them in person outside the operation theatres. To be fit for surgery one has to go through a series of examinations and evaluations termed as "pre-anaesthetic checkups" where the anaesthetist assesses the overall fitness of the person to undergo the specified kind of procedure. Pre-anaesthetic checkups not only make procedures safe for the patients but also renders patients safe for the procedure. If these checkups are found satisfactory then only the patient is allowed to undergo the procedure. On the other hand the anaesthetist also accesses that whether the procedure advised by the surgeon can be done on the particular patient or not. It is the anaesthetist who advises them to improve or to optimize their fitness levels for the safe and favourable outcome of the surgery by recommending specific medication, diet or exercise. In a way they are the "Guardians of the patient" before, during and after the surgery. As during surgery their job is not only to make patient sleep but also to make the surgical pain vanish with body paralysed and memory washed which is of course all reversible once the surgery is over. Once the procedure is over the patient is fully awake, aware but unable to recall the events of surgery. Isn't it Magical! Well it's not magical but all because of the years of experience, scientific precision and logical thinking which makes it possible for an anaesthetist. Outside the operation theatres they are the "Saviours". In Emergency, ICU and Pain clinics they extend their arms and fight to hold you back with their unconditional dedication. They are the first to reach in any life saving Emergencies and perform CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation). They are the ones who after rescuing will take care day in and day out in the ICUs (Intensive Care Units). These specialised units are indeed managed by these highly skilled team of professionals called anaesthetists. They are the ones who manage your pain whether acute or chronic, setting up a new horizon in the management of pain so as to mitigate the suffering of patients with chronic pains of cancers etc. In fact, pain management has led to the onset of a new era in anaesthesia and is sure to take humanity to a "pain free level". Ahead of times anaesthesia is going to get more and more futuristic with every passing day, more than what we can imagine. But, however futuristic or equipped this field may get, the ultimate goal of the anaesthetist is going to be the safety of the patient. Safe anaesthesia assures Safe surgery and Safe patient.
