Celebrations galore in Jammu, Samadhi in Srinagar lay in seclusion | PDP-BJP Govt like predecessors chose not to pay tributes | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 21: Even as there were functions galore in Jammu organised by various bodies to observe the 223rd birth anniversary of Maharaja Gulab Singh, the Samadhi of first Dogra ruler of J&K state lay in absolute seclusion and in a state of remoteness for all in Kashmir valley, thanks to the PDP-BJP government this time which like its predecessors chose not to pay any tributes nor remember the day. The Samadhi of Maharaja Gulab Singh built decades ago exists in Ram Munshi Bagh area of Srinagar which is not too far off from the main city nor out of bounds for anyone to reach. Yet, it lay in calm and isolation from the busy activities of main road which runs straightway to Srinagar Airport from one end. No one from the government , not even from BJP deemed it proper to lay a wreath on the Samadhi of the Dogra ruler whose name in history is significant in many ways, he being the first ruler who extended the territories of the state far and wide. As the Durbar is yet to close in Srinagar, it was expected someone at least from the BJP camp to reach this place and pay tributes to the Maharaja on his birth anniversary. Busy in its power and political activities, no one perhaps remembered the day today. Unlike on other such occasions of remembering the rulers of the state in the past, both NC and PDP too chose not to utter a word of respect for the first Dogra Maharaja of the state. This Samadhi at Srinagar is under Dharmarth Trust, which continues to be the custodian of the place. Yet for years, this place has been seen unkempt, in complete shambles with grass and shrubs having grown to heights , covering in its wraps the Samadhi and other structures around it. Though there are few lines inscribed written about the Maharaj Ghulab Singh on a concrete plaque, but due to ill maintenance, this also lies in complete obscurity and isolation. It sounds quite ironic that while the Central government has given due respect to the first Maharaja of J&K by having issued a postal stamp in his name, the state governments over the years have not been able to do their bit on this front. The present Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has been seen laying thrust on upkeep of old historical sites and on their development as heritage sites. One wonders will this Samadhi in Srinagar find place in that list of the PDP-BJP government, which has the also potential of being turned into a tourist destination from the point of view of historical importance and its central location in the summer capital. |
