Association remains a rehab centre for deadwood | In JKCA, talent goes for a toss | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 21: The J&K Cricket Association (JKCA), which was meant to act as a launching pad for emerging and talented cricketers in the State, is becoming a virtual rehabilitation centre for the deadwood, with nepotism ruling the roost. The silence of the Government in rectifying the wrongs within the JKCA has led many veteran cricketers to believe that the helmsmen have made the otherwise apolitical association a political hub. There are reports that several office bearers of the organisation are promoting their kin and sports certificates are accorded to them with the sole aim of helping them to get a Government job and other sops. A senior official of the association said there has been no serious effort by the successive regimes in the State to end corrupt practices and nepotism. "There have been numerous instances when the kin of JKCA officials were promoted to make them applicable for Government job under the sports category. This is sheer injustice with the talented youth of the State. Though the Government is very much aware of such a disastrous trend, its inaction is worrisome," said the official, wishing not to be named. There are also reports that there is an ugly practice going on within the association wherein talented youth are dishonoured while the red carpet is laid out for the deadwood which is detrimental to overall development of cricket in the State. Sources said personal likings and club politics became the yardstick for selection of the Ranji squad. Even with the change of guard at the JKCA, nothing has changed, as per reports. The club politics is ruling the roost while the internal bickering is at its peak. "At the end of the day, only cricket and cricketers suffer. It is a shame that JKCA is being allowed to run like 'Saas-Bahu' soap opera whose USP is 'Tu-Tu-Main-Main'," was how an official described the situation in the cricketing body. Contrary to the basic principle that JKCA should run like a professional sports body, the association has decayed due to the domination of politics. Interestingly, on September 22 this year, the non-serious approach of the JKCA authorities led to worst ever defeat of the under-19 women's cricket team of J&K against Punjab with the State scoring mere 38 runs. The innings lasted for just 15 minutes. As J&K won the toss and chose to bat first, all its players were shown the way to pavilion by the trained women cricketers of Punjab. Punjab interestingly chased the easy target with mere 15 balls and match was over in less than 30 minutes. There are even examples when J&K cricketers were ridiculed for not playing up to the expectations, but the truth is that until the JKCA becomes an impartial and apolitical house, no change on ground can be witnessed. |
