Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 21: Even as menace of drug addiction has been spreading rapidly amongst the youth of the state, the only Centre for Drug De-addiction in Psychiatry Hospital Jammu has been struggling to keep itself afloat for last 7 years despite spending of crores of the government exchequer, owing to indifferent attitude of Ministry for Health and Medical Education Department Jammu and Kashmir toward the centre. Notwithstanding the tall claims of State Government that a number of steps are being taken to save youth from falling prey to drugs, the lone de-addiction centre in Jammu city at Government Psychiatry Hospital Reshamgarh, Jammu has been defunct since inauguration.
Sources in the GMC Hospital Jammu informed Early Times that Centre for Drug De- addiction had been established to cure the drug addicted people, in premises of GMC Hospital Jammu and later, shifted to Government Psychiatry Hospital Ambphalla Jammu but interestingly at both the places the centre could not be functional due to political interferences and slothfulness attitude of administration of concerned hospital.
"Last year, then Minister for Health and Medical had inauguration of Psychiatry Hospital and Drug De-addiction in the same premises at Reshamgarh and crores of rupees had been spent on the building but surprisingly the centre also lying defunct, " Sources stated and adding the head of hospital least bother to take needy step to functional the centre. Ram Lal who visited hospital from Akhnoor, said, "I came here seeking help for de- addictions, but every time we came, we were told that due to shortage of staff, the centre was not working and we were advised to go somewhere else". Principal of GMC Hospital Jammu Dr Ganshyam Dev Gupta said "I am trying my best to make the centre functional "adding that Centre Government has sanctioned Rs 2.5 crores in this regard and as soon as the funds were received the remaining work will be started.
