Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 8: Family members of the National Conference activist, Haji Mohammad Yusuf, who died in the custody after being summoned by the former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to his Gupkar residence in September 2011, are still waiting for the justice.
When Omar was the Chief Minister he managed to get a clean chit for himself and his colleagues, including Nasir Aslam Wani and Devender Singh Rana by appointing a retired Judge H S Bedi, who submitted a detailed report about the circumstances which led to the Yousuf's controversial death, during his questioning at the Chief Minister's residential office on September 29, 2011.
Primarily based on the post mortem report, coupled by a forensic analysis by subject experts at the Forensic Medicine Department of the Government Medical College, Srinagar, Justice Bedi's report had established "myocardial infarction" as the cause of death. It had not found any other factor responsible for Yousuf's death - dismissing allegations that the deceased had been severely tortured at Omar's residence. No evidence of his alleged vomiting in the police vehicle, that carried him first to the State Crime Branch headquarters and later to the hospital, had come up during the course of investigation, the report had revealed.
However, opposition parties at that point of time had turned Justice Bedi's report as a "mere eyewash" and had pledged to get the Haji Yusuf's killing probed again. Even the Bharatiya Janata Party, which was in opposition at that point of time, had launched a frontal attack on Omar and accused him of getting a tailor made probe report prepared by the retired Justice Bedi.
BJP had claimed that if it comes into power in centre and state it would get the case reopened and would ensure that FIR is lodged against Omar and his close aides, who allegedly tortured Haji Yusuf to death at Omar Abdullah's Gupkar residence.
Soon after the change of guard at the Centre in 2014, son of late Haji Yusuf approached the BJP leadership in New Delhi and reminded them about the promise they had made. He demanded that FIR should be lodged against Omar and his aides but BJP leaders passed the buck, and indulged in lip service.
Since the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assumed office he has visited Jammu and Kashmir on many occasions. In his recent speech at Srinagar he acknowledged the fact that he is one of the very few Prime Ministers who has got the distinction of visiting Kashmir frequently.
Before taking over the reins of the country Prime Minister Narendra Modi never lost a chance to castigate the National Conference and blame it for all the ills. He had even made a mention of Haji Yusuf killing in the speeches which he delivered during assembly election campaigning in JK. After assuming power BJP and the Prime Minister have maintained silence over the issue and have not given a single statement over the issue thus making the family members of late Haji Yusuf believe that all politicians sail in the same boat.
