When Modi was rallying in Srinagar, SMC officials relaxed in cozy rooms
New Delhi seeks action against erring officials

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 8: When Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Srinagar to announce the historic Rs 80,000 Cr package, all the senior officials of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation were in cozy rooms, enjoying a “holiday” with their families back home. This embarrassment has prompted the central government to seek action against the “erring officials”.
In brazen violation of official protocol of ensuring their presence at PM’s rally venue, the SMC top brass including its Commissioner, Joint Commissioners, Chief Enforcement Officer and the Chief Sanitation Officer, all were “absent from at the venue”, Early Times learnt from reliable sources. A top bureaucrat in the Home Department said it was mandatory for the civic body officials to have remained on toes to review preparations for the Prime Minister’s rally. But sources said except for one concerned Ward Officer and a Sanitation Officer, no one was anywhere inside or around the venue. “Infact, we have credible evidence that they were in their homes,” the Home Department official said.
Sources said intelligence agencies have updated the central government about the “rebellious attitude” of the SMC officials and recommended that strict action be taken against the accused or that it would set a bad precedence of being non-serious towards PM’s visit to the conflict-zone.
“This has never happened that the senior officials of the host department will take Prime Minister’s visit for granted and stay back in their cozy rooms when their presence is needed the most,” explained a top police official. He said Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Asgar Samon has also been verbally pulled up by the government for having failed to ensure presence to concerned officials during Prime Minister’s visit.
The Divisional Commissioner is understood to have sought relevant details from the CID Department of Jammu and Kashmir Police about the accused officials and their activities on the fateful day.
Insiders said a PDP Minister who is accused of having patronized illegal constructions in Srinagar for his personal gains had deliberately asked the SMC officials to stay back at home. “He (minister) didn’t want the SMC officials to face Mufti Sahib or Mehbooba Ji, both of whom are annoyed with the illegal construction racket which is going on brazenly across the Srinagar city,” said an insiders.
“The minister has been telling the SMC officials that they don’t need to worry about their jobs till they are loyal to him,” said a SMC insider. It is believed that in the past eight months the same Minister got atleast two SMC Commissioners replaced only to meet his personal interests and convey it to the civic body that “I am the boss.”
Pertinently, as often reported by Early Times, rumour mills are rife that the same PDP Minister was the “mastermind behind the illegal constructions which have bloomed up in Srinagar.”
An SMC official however downplayed the matter saying “their presence was not needed during the PMs rally.”
“We will respond the explanation if any in this regard sought by the concerned,” the official said.
Pertinently the SKIMS Director Showkat Ali Zargar was also absent from duty and outside station when Modi was in Srinagar.
The central government has taken serious note of such developments including the absence of two PDP MPs from the rally.
