Edu Minister, MLA spoil Baramulla Engineering College

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 8: The students of recently established Engineering College which is part of Kashmir University's North campus undergraduate programme are moving from pillar to post for redressal of their genuine grievance related to shifting of the B Tech Computer Science to Srinagar from north campus located at Delina area of Baramulla.
The 240 students are agitating over the lack of basic requirements at its North Campus, one of the satellite campuses of the University where only B Tech in computer science engineering course is undertaken.
The campus located at Baramulla sans all the facilities which an engineering college should have, but due to tussle between the local MLA and Education Minister, the career of students has been put on stake. Few years ago the University of Kashmir established a full-fledged engineering college at Zakura in Srinagar outskirts, giving Kashmir its much awaited first engineering college. Subsequently admission notification was issued for B Tech in Mechanical engineering, Electrical engineering and Electronics and Communication engineering. Among these Mechanical engineering and Electrical engineering are new branches to be introduced for the first time by the University of Kashmir.
Pertinently University of Kashmir currently has only two branches of engineering i.e., B Tech, Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE) being run at University of Kashmir, Hazratbal and B Tech Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at North Campus, Baramulla. However new admissions in the already existing course of B.Tech ECE have also been advertised for the Zakura campus but that didn't happen. It is obvious that with the starting of an Engineering College all existing engineering courses as well as new courses should function at the Engineering College of University, Zakura campus, but due to political interference of Bramulla MLA that didn't happen. Infact Education Minister Naeem Akhtar and Vice Chancellor University of Kashmir were in favour of making Zakura campus operational, but the pressure mounted by PDP MLA from Baramulla Javaid Ahmad Baigh created lot of fuss in this whole issue. The MLA wants that Engineering college should function from Baramulla which is not possible practically and he is resisting to allow shifting the Computer Science branch to Srinagar's Zakura campus.
It goes much beyond the previously stated logic and makes serious sense technically and economically paving way for sharing of resources which as per existing set-up is not possible.
"Engineering just like medical is a professional course that defines the future skill and expertise of the society by and large. It is very simple and logical to understand that an Engineering College should have all engineering courses functioning there only regardless whether the Engineering College is set at Zakura or any other existing campuses of the University of Kashmir, just like a Medical College has various departments like medicine, pediatrics, orthopaedics, radiology etc operating together and all at one place.
Out of 240 students 200 plus want that Computer science branch should be shifted from Baramulla to Srinagar, but nobody cares. Is this democracy? "said a student of B Tech Computer Science Arsalan Manzoor.
The students have demanded that Government must decide this issue without any further delay. The authorities need to think above politics and ensure career of students is safeguarded. Students while talking to Early Times said that Zakura campus has all the facilities and keeping one branch in Baramulla and other branches in Zakura (Srinagar) makes no sense and this issue should be addressed once for all by the Education Minister Naeem Akhtar said the students.
