Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 8: In the midst of a fierce political battle over AIIMS between Jammu and Srinagar, Postal Training College, a premier institute of the Government of India, Department of Posts and Telegraph that was approved to be constructed in Jammu has been lost in oblivion and no eye brows have been raised. Sources in the department divulge that former Chief Post Master General J&K, John Samuel got the institute approved for Jammu way back in September 2013, but as soon as it was allocated to Jammu, a lobby within the department backed by a group of valley based politicians activated to get the college shifted to Srinagar. "During this time, Samuel got transferred and his successors took little initiative to pursue the project. The department had been in the meanwhile receiving vital inputs that any move to shift the college to Srinagar will defeat the very purpose as besides unconducive the law and order situation in the valley, Jammu was much more accessible to the trainees expected to come to the college from across the country" disclosed an informed source. ET learnt that the district administration was approached by the DoPT for allocating land for the college, but after lot of dilly dallying, two pieces of land were identified for the proposed project, one near Bari Brahmana and other in Bajalta, but the project still remained a non starter. "It has been over two years since the project was allocated to Jammu, but it is a pity that it could not even begin till now" said a source in the department. "Some officials of the department had approached the BJP MP from Jammu, Jugal Kishor, but he did little beyond empty recurring" he added. Postal college is a prestigious institute for the training of various trades of the Department of Posts and Telegraph. There are only five such colleges in the entire country and establishment of such an institute shall have substantial bearing of the economy of the surrounding area besides improving the infrastructure. |
