PM Modi's Kashmir policy also contributed to BJP defeat in Bihar
Time to learn lessons

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Nov 8: As expected, the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi suffered a massive defeat in the crucial Bihar. The nature and magnitude of the defeat of the BJP at the hands of the JDU-RJD-and Congress combine could be seen from the fact that the BJP could not even win 60 seats in the 243-member House.
The defeat of the BJP was all the more humiliating as it could not retain even those 91 constituencies from where it had won in 2010. That the BJP suffered such an ignominious defeat despite the fact the Prime Minister himself addressed no less than 28 elections rallies only established that he, the party's star campaigner in Bihar, has lost his credibility, appeal, sheen and charisma. This is not an ordinary defeat. It is a major, major defeat, which will have serious repercussions on the party at the national level with not only all the non-BJP parties and its own allies like Shiv Sena but also an influential section of BJP leadership and RSS upping their ante against the Prime Minister, the party president and those who constitute members of their coterie. Indeed, this defeat has weakened the position and authority of the Prime Minister and the party president not only in India but also at the international level.
Several reasons were responsible for the debacle of the BJP in Bihar and these are well known and already catalogued. It is hardly necessary to catalogue each one of them in this report. Suffice to say that his economic, political, social, foreign and defence policies resulted in the collapse of the BJP in Bihar. It has set a trend and there are reasons to believe that UP, like Delhi and Bihar, will also reject the BJP. UP and Bihar were the two major state which helped the BJP capture power in New Delhi in 2014. The BJP+ had won 104 Lok Sabha seats from these two states alone and its total tally in the general elections was 282.
Surprisingly, no political commentator or election expert took cognizance of one more factor that contributed to the massive defeat of the BJP in Bihar. The factor was the Prime Minister's Kashmir policy. Jammu & Kashmir figured quite prominently in the election campaign in Bihar and TV studios with the critics of the BJP tearing into it and charging it with allowing the situation in Kashmir to deteriorate to the extent that the hoisting of Pakistani and IS flags across the Kashmir Valley became a routine affair. It critics consistently attacked the BJP for adopting a policy that further complicated matters in the already troubled Valley and they had warned the BJP that it shall have to pay a very heavy price by compromising the Indian stand on Jammu & Kashmir.
It is hoped that the defeated Prime Minister and his coterie, which appreciate the Kashmiri Muslim sub-nationalism, will review their Kashmir policy and strength the nationalist forces in the state. It should remember that the situation in Jammu province is good for the BJP. If elections are held today in the state, the BJP will only bite dust.
