Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 8: Various sections of society feel ignored in the announcement of Rs 80,000 crore package for the State by Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday. While Congress, National Conference(NC) and other opposition parties term it hoodwinking as 40,000 crore were already earmarked for the construction of National Highways and tunnels in the State and by mingling it with package, the BJP led NDA Government was hoodwinking the people on the issue. They saidthe package as announced by PM is nothing but an eye wash. The NC and Congress are not also happy with the package as they had demanded over Rs 40,000 crore alone for flood hit people of Kashmir Valley and by providing mere Rs 8000 crore according to the two parties will not solve the problems of flood hit people of last year who have suffered an immense loss. The two parties are of the opinion that the loss suffered by the people in Kashmiri Valley due to last year’s flash floods is over 40000 crore and the previous NC-Congress coalition after a proper survey have send a detailed report to Centre demanding over Rs 40,000 crore for the rehabilitation of flood victims. The two parties still stick to their demand and say that the package given for the rehabilitation of flood victims is meagre. The greatest flake which the BJP led NDA government has drawn on the package is that it totally neglected the West Pak refugees for whose welfare not even a single pie was kept in the much talked about economic package for the State.
The West Pak refugees fighting for their citizenship rights for last over 66 years have been sidetracked despite the fact that since their displacement from West Pakistan in 1947 the BJP has been pleading their cause, leading their protest demonstrations and even its MLAs have protested in State Assembly umpteen times demanding the citizenship rights for them. Though grant of citizenship rights was a tedious issue due to special status of the State of J&K but what Central Government could have done for these hapless refugees is that it could have earmarked some money in the package for their welfare or announced a special job package for them in para military forces or Central Government organizations. This class of people feels totally betrayed and cheated now and their hopes have also dashed to ground as BJP also turned their back towards them with whom they had many expectations. Likewise the farmers are also a disgruntled lot in the State as no special package was announced especially for Basmati growers. The representative of Basmati growers Tejinder Singh while expressing his dismay over the package said that they have suffered heavy loss during last year’s flash floods and rains as well as this year’s hailstorm. They were hopeful that Union Government will take steps to compensate the same but it failed to make any announcement while announcing the package.
