KUPWARA, Nov 23: A day after Lt Colonel of an Army's Territorial wing was injured in a gun battle with militants in Kupwara forests, security forces Monday claimed that it killed a non-local militant whose identity has not been yet ascertained, while as efforts were on to flush out his accomplices.
A senior police official told early times that, "during the massive search operation in the dense forests of Manigah sector, the soldiers managed to kill one of the militants and rest are believed to be hiding in a nearby jungle.
"With the resumption of the gun-battle this morning, extra reinforcement was rushed to the area preventing fleeing of militants in the forest area, the official said.
The official said, on Sunday Nov 22, a Lieutenant-Colonel of 160 Territorial Army was severely injured during a combing operation with militants in Handwara area.
On a tip of information about the presence of militants in the forests of an area, the army has launched a search operation against the militants in Bhawan village in Handwara area, the official added.
Sources said, "An unidentified militant was killed on Monday morning whose dead body was handed over to the police for legal formalities.
Notably the militant was killed in the dense forests of Manigah, where Colonel Santosh Mahadik was killed last week, sources added.
Sources further said, "Security forces are continuing a massive search operation in the forest near the Line of Control (LoC) since November 13 following information about presence of a group of heavily- armed militants.
It is pertinent to mention here that, On Nov 17, the Commanding Officer (CO) of 41 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) Colonel Santosh, who was leading a search party, was killed when militants hiding in a dense forest area of Haji Naka opened fire.
Meanwhile Srinagar based defence spokesperson Col N.N Joshi confirmed to early times that, "on Monday morning a brief exchange of firing took place between the two sides and after which the additional teams of security forces were rushed to the area to prevent other militants from escaping.
The unidentified militant was killed in the encounter in the dense forests of Manigah, and the search operation is still going on, said Joshi.
