Jammu, Nov 23: Agriculture department in district Doda is running on complete adhocism with nearby 50 percent posts lying vacant for years. Sources in department concerned informed Early Times that the district has two posts of Mushroom development Officer but are lying vacant. Of the 17posts sanctioned for Zonal Agriculture Extension Officer only 10 are in position, 65 posts of Junior Agriculture Extension Officer 38posts are still vacant for years. They further said that Soil Testing Laboratory is running with one Research Assistant, inspite of two sanctioned posts of Research AssistantAnd two posts of Lab Assistant , same have not been filled for years. "Due to insufficient staff, the district soil testing laboratories (STLs) of Agriculture department are not meeting expectations ", sources said, adding that the feedbackis required to be provided among the farmers before sowing crops, asAgriculture Department, collects samples of soil at the time of cultivation. A farmer said that the agriculture department has been doing futile exercise for many years, collecting the soilsamples from different region of the district but, not providing thefeedback They further said, "All the reports of soil testing are lying in the office of Agricultural Extensional officers (AEO) of AgricultureDepartment but it is not being distributed timely among the farmers,it shows lackadaisical approaches of department toward the agriculturesector in state." On one hand state government aims to increase productivity of food grain, on the other it has failed to provide sufficient staff. "The farmer visits zonal office of agriculture department for soil testing and other causes but due to lack of manpower in zone, theyvisit district headquarter where the department collects sample andpromising us to provide the report in time, but the promises remainunmet always", farmer said, adding that the STLs prove futile andburden on state exchequer, if it is not meeting its target. "Whenever we ask the department about the reports, the officials sayreports is not finalized or not sent back by the laboratories", another farmer said.
