Kathua canal about to ebb, people allege misappropriation of funds | | | Arun Kumar Early Times Report Kathua, Nov 23: The Union government's Ministry for Cleanliness of Holy Ganga River spends crores of rupees every year to preserve water bodies in entire India including Kathua district of J&K, but there is no mechanism to check whether the funds are properly used. Residents of Hamirpurvillage of Kathuaallegemisappropriation of funds meant for cleanliness of the 4 km canal flowing from Jasrota to Hamirpur. Kuldip Sharma, a local resident, said the canal's water was used for drinking purposes by the villagers. He said the canal water catered to around 20 villages and besides drinking it was used for irrigating thousands of kanals of land. "But the canal is about to ebb due 3-4 feet silt that affects irrigation of entire area," Sharma said. Another resident Ravi Kumarsaid the canal has turned into a dirty pond. He blamed officials of the Irrigation Department for the mess. NareshKhajuria, another villager, said funds are being disbursed every year for cleanliness of the canal but they are misused as the canal has not been cleaned for a long time. He said the villagers have been raising the issue with the authorities concerned but to no avail. When contacted, Irrigation Department's junior engineer, Ashok Thakur, dismissed the allegations about misappropriation of funds as untrue and said the canal was cleaned duly and the drive will be continuein future too. |
