Attempts to change Jammu's demography: BJP, administration not bothered | | | Abodh Sharma Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 23: At a time when separatist beat their chests alleging attempts to change the demography of Kashmir over drop of the hat, there have been quiet and focused attempts to actually change the demography of Jammu targeting certain pockets and administration and the BJP which represents the people of Jammu have chosen to conveniently turn a blind eye. While these attempts are being made in orchestrated but secretive manner for long, a classified advertisement published in a local newspaper a few days back has raised many an eyebrows eventhough the administration has continued to stay indifferent. The advertisement regarding sale of plots of different sizes in the upcoming colony in the outskirts of the city clearly mentions that the plots can be bought by the buyers of a particular community only. "Plots for Muslim Community only" reads the very first line of the classified advertisement, in an evident attempt to divide the society on religious lines. The proposed colony is coming up in Sunjwan area, opposite new government quarters and the advertisers have even published their contact numbers, clearly inferring that they are either completely ignorant of their act or are not concerned about any administrative action for public sentiment. Sources divulged to Early Times that a private colonizer is developing this colony in 130 kanals of land and the sale of plot is open only to people of a particular community. "This is a clear attempt to tarnish the pluralistic ethos of Jammu region and this has been going on for long" said a local adding, "plots in many other areas of the city have been sold to buyers of a particular community and as a result, the pattern of habitation in Jammu has undergone a definite change in last few years". "Had it been the other way round, it would have made national headlines, but this highly objectionable advertisement has shockingly evoked not response from any quarter" he added further. While administration and BJP have continued to be in deep slumber over this dangerous pattern, this is not the first attempt of its kind to communalize the state. Interestingly, repeated tender notices issued by IRCON, a government of India undertaking had invited sharp denigration when it specified in its notices that only candidates from Valley were eligible to file tenders for different works. The notices had evoked sharp reactions from Jammu based parties and the company was forced to withdraw discriminatory tender notices. |
