UT status for Ladakh: Congress challenges 'U-turn wali BJP' | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 23: The Congress, which suffered massive defeat at the hands of the BJP in the recently-held elections to Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, on Monday lambasted the BJP for its "U-turn" on its stand on Union Territory status for Ladakh and accused it of betraying the trust of the Ladakhis, who elected 18 BJP Councilors and enabled the party to form the Council for the first time in the Cold-Desert Ladakh. The Congress challenged what it called U-turn wali BJP to move a bill in the upcoming session of the state legislature seeking Union Territory status for Ladakh region and held out a commitment that the Congress law-makers from the region will vote for the bill. "There is a BJP-PDP coalition Government in J&K, but they have failed to move a resolution for UT status to Ladakh in J&K assembly. If BJP moves such resolution, our two MLAs will support it first and foremost," said Leh District Congress Committee President Tsering Samphel in response to BJP MP Thupstan Chhewang's statement on the issue while addressing a rally at Polo Ground, Leh, on November 21. "Thupstan Chhewang has said that the BJP had never promised UT status to Ladakh in 6 months, is a white lie. People of Ladakh have not forgotten 18th May 2014, when one of the tallest leaders of BJP, Nitin Gadkari, from the same Polo ground had declared that UT for Ladakh will be granted in 6 months," Samphal said to call the BJP's bluff and present a true picture of facts. Samphel also reminded Thupstan Chhewang that "he had won the MP election on the plank of 'Vote for BJP, UT for Ladakh' but it is unfortunate that he has not uttered even a word in Lok Sabha regarding UT issue during the last 16 months and has not even taken up the issue with the Union Home Minister who rejected any possibility of UT Status to Ladakh". It is difficult to say if the BJP would accept the challenge and move the required bill in the legislature for the purpose. After all, the BJP is sharing power with a party that, like all the Kashmir-based and Valley-centric parties, dislikes the idea of Ladakh being conferred the status of UT. But more than that, none other than the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has turned down the UT demand. It is obvious that the BJP would face hostile environment in Ladakh with the defeated Congress upping its ante against the BJP and exposing its politics of bluff and deceit. |
