BJP minister's dream of becoming DyCM likely to remain a dream
11/24/2015 12:46:23 AM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 23: A senior BJP minister might be aspiring to be new Deputy Chief Minister of the state when Mehbooba Mufti replaces her father as the Chief Minister, but his dream may remain a dream as the BJP doesn't appear to trust him as a loyalist who can lead the party affairs in the coalition.
While speculations are rife that Mehbooba will soon replace her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as the Chief Minister, insiders claim that there is every possibility about incumbent Deputy CM being replaced.
One of the aspirants for the chair of Deputy CM from the BJP camp happens to be a senior BJP minister. Sources said he has been constantly lobbying in the party circles and claims that he is fit to be the Deputy Chief Minister. While some of the Jammu-based BJP leaders have extended support for the minister, some senior party leaders in New Delhi have just rejected the idea about his elevation as the Deputy CM.
Sources said some of the veteran BJP leaders plead that the minister cannot be considered as loyalist but an opportunist who last year ditched Congress for personal gains.
"BJP is a national party which cannot rely on turncoats. Our party has a history of having banked on loyalists who don't change their loyalties with times. For that matter he is an opportunist who joined us only for his own sake," said a BJP insider.
Since the day it came to fore that Mehbooba would be new Chief Minister the minister is leaving no stone unturned to be in the limelight only to grab attention of the party leadership in New Delhi.
But his past seems to be coming in the way. He had left Congress in July 2014 after he attacked leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad for denying him party ticket for Udhampur Lok Sabha seat from where Azad contested in 2014 Lok Sabha polls and lost to BJP's Jitendera Singh.
The minister, who hails from Kathua district, had won the 2003 and 2008 Lok Sabha elections as Congress candidate from Udhampur. He was elected to Jammu and Kashmir Assembly as MLA in 1996 and 2002 polls. He became minister for Health and Medical Education in the Mufti-led coalition government in 2003. But last year ahead of the Assembly polls, he joined BJP and now aspired to be the Deputy Chief Minister.
