Be ready for ULB elections: Sheikh Mehboob Iqbal | | | Early Times Report doda, Dec 7: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today held a workers' meeting at Doda under the chairmanship of its state general secretary Sheikh Mehboob Iqbal and asked to be ready for municipal, Panchayat and Urban Local bodies election, which is scheduled to be held next year in April. According to press release, on the occasion, Sheikh discussed the developmental issues of the Bhaderwah and Doda constituency with the workers and asked them to reach out to people at grass-root level. Iqbal lambasted previous NC-Congress coalition government for "delaying" these elections in Jammu and Kashmir."At that time there were 14.5 lakh voters for 76 ULB and presently there are 82 ULB including two municipal corporations of Jammu and Srinagar. The ULB elections were due in March 2010 but the previous government couldn't hold elections despite setting several deadlines," Iqbal said. PDP general secretary said the present government was very keen to hold the civic polls as early as possible to strengthen these basic units of democracy in the state. He also asked the workers to intensify the party activities on ground and to establish constructive contact with general masses. He asked the youth to involve themselves with the developmental affairs to contribute their bit in the socio economic transformation of their respective areas. "The ensuing civic polls will offer youth an opportunity and a broad based platform to serve in their native areas in a befitting manner," he maintained. |
