Vijaypur, Dec 7: The major road accidents along National highway passing through Samba district and its interior roads still go unnoticed by the authorities and the people as well as overloading is on with authorities yet in deep slumber.
Some locals said that public transport vehicles plying on various routes of the Samba district in particular to the interiors of district always seem thumbing down the basic traffic norms and regulations including overloading, thereby increasing the chances of accidents.
"To earn more money local bus and mini bus operators are violating the traffic norms and accommodate more passengers than the actual capacity in the vehicles, they said. Citing an example, a local recalled that a bus jam-packed with passengers rammed into a bridge near Nanak Chak of Samba, in which three people were killed and many others were injured, but violations of traffic norms still are unabated. Irked over the overloading menace, locals said the directions of concerned authorities have least impact on transporters and drivers as they knew no strict action yet has been initiated which is the need of hour.
"The Jammu-Kathua route buses could be seen speeding up just to get more passengers to make more money while mini buses on interior roads are no different to this as these too are always seen overloaded and speeding up, said Karan Singh a local from Vijaypur.
"The Motor Vehicle Department and traffic police seems to be casual and has turned a blind eye to the menace," another local added.
Meanwhile, Kuldeep Singh, Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO), Samba said that with a view to curb the menace of traffic violations, we have conducted extensive checking drive once in a week. "A large number of vehicles have been booked under the provision of Motor Vehicle Act, he said adding, "we have collected Rs 30 lakh as fines for various traffic violations from the offenders till November 2015. "We are also trying to educate people about various safety measures need to be taken to avoid road mishap, he said.
