Early Times Report

Kathua, Dec.29: Despite ban on cutting of green trees, the felling of green gold goes unabated at Hatli Panchayat in Forest Division Kathua with alleged backing of forest mafia by Revenue and forest department officers who grant permission for cutting of trees.
According to sources, the land mafia didn't stop here as it is using single permission for transportation of wooden clefts/logs repeatedly and unstoppably.
Sources added that some black sheep in Revenue Department grant permission for single dry tree but a large number of trees are being felled down by contractors. "Nobody there to control on such menace even Forest department has not establish any check post to control on cutting and transportation of wooden logs, sources added, adding this unholy nexus has left the public annoyed as they are feeling that the lungs of the area -the trees which help to create fresh air are being destroyed while authorities are in deep slumber. Expressing his concerns, Yog Raj, a senior citizen said that unabated cutting of green trees in entire Panchayat is brewing resentment among locals especially against forest officials who despite representations in this regard failed to take action against the violators.
"It seems none seems to hold one's responsibility to save environment, he said, adding, "this is clear violation of Apex Court's ban on cutting of green trees." He further alleged that those who ought to control on illegal cutting of trees allegedly are in hand in gloves with the offenders just to make easy money from contractors.
Environment activist Rajesh Kumar alleged that some Revenue officers are granting permissions only but never bothered to visit the ground position. He also said permission for cutting of few dry trees is being misused for cutting of number of green trees too besides illegal transportation.
Humming similar tones Punjab Singh Sarpanch of Hatli Panchayat alleged Revenue and Forest department having hands in glove with offenders are just harming environment and livelihood of locals. He also said that rural body had raised issue before concerned officials i.e. DFO and Tehsildar Kathua but none of bothered to take action. He demanded strict action against tainted officers of both Revenue and Forest departments including contractors too.
When contacted to DFO Kathua Ashwani Kumar ensured to verify the illegal cutting of tree/ transportation. He however discarded all allegation leveled of felling of green trees in the area and ensured to cancel transportation permission of such tainted contractors.
