Local body polls likely to be deferred
12/30/2015 12:15:31 AM

Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 29: The Government could postpone the local body elections which were likely to be held in March next if the condition of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed doesn't improve considerably shortly.
Sources said that though the CM has recovered but it will take some time before he could attend the duties full.
"The CM is recovering but it can't be said for certain at this stage that he will join the duties in full. He may be advised a complete rest for some time and if the rest is prolonged that holding local bodies elections will be postponed as he is the tallest leader of the party and it can't go to the polls in his absence," said a senior PDP leader.
The Government had planned to the hold local body elections in March next and for it all major excercise has been done. The electoral rolls have also been revised. The polls are seen as a major first test for the coalition partner, especially the BJP to test waters after being in the Government for about an year.
However, it now hangs on the medical condition of the Chief Minister. The sources said that PDP leadership is itself attending to the CM and they are rushing back-and-forth from the Delhi. The party president Mehbooba Mufti is herself in the Delhi and their entire focus is on the Mufti now.
A senior PDP leader said, the party is not able to concentrate as of now on the ground its only focus is on the health of the CM . Even the entire leadership is also concerned about this only so if the things continue to remain so then very less time will be available to go for the polls and then it could be on the back-foot.
"We can't go to the polls if the CM and party president is not able to concentrate fully. Mufti Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti are the two most important leaders of the party and in their absence, the party doesn't know how to do the leg-work. So all hangs on the health of the CM and also importantly what he decides if he recovers well in time," said the leader.
