Let proposed Indo-Pak talks usher in peace | | | Hawks in India and Pakistan con tinue to be pessimistic about the process of dialogue for which the stage has been set by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who had two sitting with Nawaz Sharif in the last one month. The way Pakistan Prime Minister's Advisor on Foreign Affairs, Sartaj Aziz, has expressed pessimism about the progress of talks indicates that some hawks in Pakistan do not want the two sides to promote cordial ties which is key to peace not only in the Indian subcontinent but in the entire south Asian region. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's Advisor on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz has said it would not be fair to expect much from the talks scheduled in Islamabad next month between the foreign secretaries of Pakistan and India. Voicng his views about the possibility of peace between Pakistan and India, Aziz said it would not be fair to expect instant resolution of all issues between the two countries. And therefore, initially focus would be on reduction of tension and maintenance of calm on the Line of Control to provide relief to the people living across LoC, Aziz said the comprehensive dialogue in January between Pakistan and India will focus on all outstanding issues, including Kashmir. He said in a meeting between Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan in Lahore on Friday, it was decided that foreign secretaries of the two countries would meet in mid-January to decide details of dialogue on all issues. He has said promotion of good relations with all neighbours is the policy of Prime Minister Sharif as this is a pre-requisite to benefit from projects aimed at regional connectivity and resolution of energy crisis. What else one should expect from the proposed talks? And that too when various problems confronting Pakistan and India have bedeviled relations between the two neighbours. One should harbor hopes for a better tomorrow and if this attitude is adopted by political leaders in Pakistan and India the process of dialogue may witness hardly any hitch. If the Army and the ISI continue to derail the peace process or the process of dialogue the relations between the two neighbours may suffer further damage. If all the major opposition parties in Pakistan do not support Nawaz Sharif in his mission for promoting peace with India talks are bound to fail. Similarly if the Congress, the grand alliance of Congress, JD(U), RJD, TMC and others do not support Modi's mission for promoting cordial ties with Pakistan the proposed talks are bound to falter and fail. The Congress should stop feeling guilty of its failure to resolve bilateral problems for decades being power while Modi, in just over one year, is on the path of progress as far as achieving some breakthrough in promoting friendly ties with Pakistan. Over the years both India and Pakistan, possibly India more than Pakistan, have witnessed the gory scenes of death and destruction because of conflict and differences. Let us it Sartaj Aziz's views correct to the dot that all issues cannot be resolved through the process of dialogue. If there is peace on the LOC and on the IB is it not a gain for both New Delhi and Islamabad ?If the two sides make a firm commitment that the 12 year old agreement on border ceasefire will not be violated, is it not a big gain for both the sides? Well every political analyst and observer believe that Kashmir is nonnegotiable. The issue cannot be resolved even in sustained talks because of the known stand of India and Pakistan. Let India and Pakistan forget about the Kashmir issue and try to resolve other bilateral problems. Let the talks concentrate on confidence building measures on promotion of cordial ties between New Delhi and Islamabad. Let the hawks on both sides adopt a pragmatic role and help the process of dialogue to achieve some desired results. Let one avoid being pessimistic. |
