Money drawn against bogus MGNREGA works, fake land leveling' v Major scam surfaces in RDD's Qimoh Block | | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Report Kulgam, Dec 30: In this southern district, a major scam has surfaced in Rural Development Department's Qimoh Block where blue-eyed contractors in nexus with officials of the department have withdrawn lakhs of rupees from bogus works. Inhabitants of Baan village of Kulgam on Wednesday alleged that lakhs of rupees have been drawn against fake works executed under the centrally sponsored MGNREGA in the area. The locals said they had sought information from Block Development Office (BDO) Qaimoh under State RTI Act regarding works executed in the village by local Panchayat. "However, the details provided by the BDO mismatch on the ground. On papers, scores of works have been shown executed. Ironically, on ground most of these works do not exist. Money has been illegally drawn against fake land leveling and construction of bathrooms. The scam must be thoroughly investigated," says Dr Abul Bari Naik, a RTI activist who obtained the information under RTI Act. He said that the information provided by the department reveals that it has constructed 16 concrete bathrooms but none of them on ground currently exists. "If no structure in the village collapsed due to last year floods what happened to the bathrooms then. I wonder," Dr Bari added. He said that a huge amount has been also withdrawn against land leveling but we fail to understand why department has not disclosed the names of the beneficiaries. "Department claims to have constructed crossing but on ground no single crossing or bridge exits," he said. Villagers too expressed shock over the surfaced irregularities and sought the intervention of concerned authorities. "I just came to know that on papers I was given fifteen thousand rupees for repairing my house but reality is that VLW Mohd Ramzan gave me only eight thousand rupees," Naza, a lady told media. RTI Activist, Dr Bari said that he sought again more information under RTI Act to expose the officials involved in the scam. "Now my hunt is to expose the officials for the matter I have sought complete E-Book from BDO office Qimoh to know the officers who have released such a huge amount against bogus works," he said. Locals from the village also demanded a social audit into the issue. "The local Panchayat members who are found involved in the scam should be taken to task," they demanded. |
