Alleged torture of inmates in Udhampur jail: HC directs principal distt judge to file report | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 30: The state High Court has directed concerned Principal District Judge to visit Udhampur jail and file within one week a report in light of an application filed by Kashmir High Court Bar Association, alleging torture of the inmates in the prison. Hearing an application filed by the lawyers' body, Justice Muzaffar Hussain Attar also directed Superintendent of the jail to ensure that the inmates were treated properly and provided all kinds of facilities as permissible under the jail manual. "The Superintendent, District Jail, Udhampur, must know that the inmates of the jail have the constitutional rights guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India available to them and he is duty bound to comply with the mandate contained therein," the court said and directed him to submit his report about the averments made in the application by the Bar association within a week's time. The Bar Association has stated that the prisoners were "tortured" in Udhampur jail by the authorities and that they were subjected to forced labour in violation of the jail rules and regulations. The court directed Principal Sessions Judge, Udhampur, to visit the district jail and file the report after interacting with the inmates. "Report be filed within a week's time," the court said. Meanwhile, the court also directed Tihar jail authorities to provide all the facilities including the canteen and medical facilities in accordance with rules and jail manual to the jail inmates. |
