Masarat Alam continues to stay put in Kot-Bhalwal jail | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 30: Separatist Masarat Alam continues to stay put inside the Kot-Bhalwal central jail here even after his detention under Public Safety Act (PSA) was quashed by the high court Tuesday. According to highly placed official sources, Alam could not be released from the jail as the jail superintendent had not been served with the court order till late Wednesday evening. In the absence of any formal confirmation, speculations were rife over his current status. Unconfirmed reports, however, claimed that Alam was rearrested late Tuesday evening but no designated authority either denied or confirmed it. Alam was arrested under the PSA on April 17 in Srinagar after he organised and led a separatist rally to receive separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Pakistani flags were waived at the rally, following which Mufti Muhammad Sayeed-led government had come under severe public criticism for releasing Alam from detention within days of the formation of PDP-BJP government in the state. It remains to be seen whether Alam would be allowed to proceed to Kashmir or would be slapped with fresh charges to ensure his detention. Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh had earlier clearly hinted that the state government would take appropriate action to ensure that law and order situation "does not worsen on ground zero in the valley". |
