Official apathy takes sheen of Shalimar garden

Srinagar, Mar 5: The government’s apathy has adversely affected historic Mughal garden Shalimar, with number of withered Chinar trees posing serious threats to the visitors. Tourists and locals informed Early Times that the government besides being casual to uphold the splendor of one of the world famous Mughal Gardens has completely overlooked the probabilities of mishap keeping in view the feeble condition of chinar trees.
“These chinar trees could not only become the cause of mishap but they have also given unsightly looks to (Baradari) porches constructed during mughal era. There are number of chinar tress which have now grown old and could become the cause of serious mishap anytime,’’ Raman Kumar, a Bengali tourist who was on a month long visit to valley said. Despite repeated attempts by ‘Early Times’ Correspondent, Director Floriculture, Talat Parvez could not be contacted for official version. Kumar said that the upper fraction of the garden where historic porches portrays aptitude of ancient architect have worn shabby looks due to the festered chinar tress. An official wishing anonymity said that the department despite being apprised by the locals as well as experts about the implications of frail chinar’s seems to be in deep slumbers to take corrective measures vis-à-vis keeping pristine glory of the garden intact. “These sensitive things which have been ignored by the authorities from time to time has changed the perception of tourists who are excited to visit Kashmir, these chinar trees have grown old which needs to be axed, I personally talked to Director Floriculture about the issue however my concerns were ignored ,” Abdul an international tourist guide bemoaned. He said whenever he gets chance to take foreign tourists to Mughal gardens he intentionally ignores to show them upper portion of Shalimar garden as they could recoil from revisiting Shalimar in future. “Mughal gardens give a picture of splendid Kashmir valley to tourists, but given the careless approach of the authorities with regards to their maintenance I have been disinclined to take tourists to shabby but otherwise imperative section of the Shalimar garden,” he said. He said that the government should take tangible steps.
