PSC indulging in favouritism, say job aspirants | | | Muhammad Mukaram Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 5: Aspirants for the posts of Assistant Professors have accused the Public Service commission of resorting to favouritism while framing selection lists. The interview notice for shortlisted candidatesfor Assistant Professors in Islamic Studies was issued by the PSC on March 3. The aspirants who were dropped out claimed that the selection on the basis of Master’s is a cruel joke with their research work and experience. The 32 shortlisted candidates out of180 applicants have been called for interview on the merit obtained at PG level. But an official at the PSC said the general eligibility for the post of AP set by University Grants Commissionis that the candidate should be either PhD or PG with National Eligibility Test in the concerned subject. “Then candidates are called for the interview as per the number of applicants, like if the number of applicants is more, then a screening test is conducted, and then the interview list is prepared in the ratio of 1:3 (3 candidates against 1 post advertised). However if the number of applicants is less, then the interview list is prepared on the basis of marks obtained in PG and 90 points are allocated to PG and 10 points to MPhil and PhD,” said the official. This criteria of PSC which gives weightage of 90% to PG, which goes even “against UGC rules” has showed an exit door to many deserving students. “The PSC guidelines have been set some three decades ago and we have to follow them,” Shakeel ul Rehman, Secretary PSC, told Early Times. “It’s disturbing to know that an Assistant professor will be selected majorly on the basis of his PG percentage not on the merit that he or she is a researcher,” Mehraj udin Bhat a drop out candidate said. Another candidate with masters in the subject, NET qualified and a Phd, with wide number of research publication and also with five years of teaching experience at university level has been dropped on the basis that he has less percentage in PG level and interestingly his student who has more Marks only in Masters degree has been selected. Rehman added that the department ‘accepts that there are some faultines’ but at “this point of time we cant do anything about it.” The department according to Rehman is in process of studying the issues and other rule books of other commissions in India to rectify the faults. |
