Governor's masterstroke | | | Bijay Charak
Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 5: The Governor's rule is gaining popularity across the state with every passing day. Governor N. N. Vohra's decision, for example, to terminate 100 absent doctors has won widespread appreciation. A cursory glance over the decision taken against the absent doctors, who have been enjoying safe havens in foreign countries or in private practice for years together despite being employee of Health department, was contemplated by popular government many years back. The then Health Minister Sham Lal Sharma had also assured that those doctors, who had been found absent for years' together would be terminated soon but a decision was never taken. "The file of termination of absent doctors went on shuttling from one office to another but the absent doctors, majority of whom were highly influential, escaped termination decision", sources said. An official of Health department pleading anonymity said that it was only a warning signal to the absent doctors, who in turn got the delay in their termination allegedly by greasing palms of bureaucrats or politicians. Time and again the issue of termination of absent doctors was discussed and highlighted in media by the then Health Ministers but a decision was never taken. "For the last nearly six years the issue remained closed in file work but it is the Governor NN Vohra, who took only few days to decide on the issue and on Friday ordered the termination, which came as a shock for these absent doctors", sources said. They further said that it was a very long practice of doctors, who remained absent for years together from their service and tried their luck in private practice in other states or in foreign countries. "They know that their job is secure and if their private practice will flourish, then they will resign. Moreover, some of them even after flourishing of their business return back only to get their benefits by knocking the door of court or by other means and got their pay and other benefits", an official said, adding that the popular government must take an immediate action. |
