Dusty Srinagar streets leave people fuming | 'Experts blame outdated techniques' | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad
Early Times Report Srinagar, Mar 8: Cloud of dust looming large on almost all major roads of Srinagar city has left residents fretting and fuming. The unending construction work coupled with apathy of authorities, have aggravated the woes of commuters. The doctors here said that the number of patients with respiratory problems has increased in the OPD's of various hospitals and other health centers over the past few months. "Continuous exposure to the dust has resulted in cough and allergy of many people. We are also receiving many patients who suffer from Bacterial growth, Asthma, Bronchitis, and other respiratory problems," one of the senior doctors of SMHS said. One of the senior doctors at Chest Diseases hospital said that already it is an allergic season, further the dust which the roads are emitting in Srinagar can lead to many respiratory diseases. "Diseases like lower respiratory tract infection can become common besides asthma attacks among the people who are already suffering from it," he said. He said that the hospital is receiving many patients who are complaining about the chest infections due to the intake of polluted air. "We are receiving huge number of patients. The polluted air can lead to complication among TB patients also," he said and added that people should adopt precautionary measures as the conditions could worsen in coming months if roads are not cleaned. Meanwhile experts say, the problems can be solved if the authorities shun outdated techniques and instead adopts latest road repairing techniques of filling potholes. "The government is working on old techniques to repair potholes. If a pothole is not repaired immediately, it tends to damage the road leading to cloud of dust when vehicle pass," one of engineer working in R&B department said. He said that if people want to breathe quality air in the city, steps like paved roads, effective mass transport, tightening of emission norms, uninterrupted power supply to eliminate generators and a ban on 10-year-old vehicles will have to be taken. It is pertinent to mention here that dust covered roads of the city have added to city pollution to such an extent that people are now also opting for masks to prevent respiratory problems. However, the experts say that the masks available in the market are not viable against the current status of pollution in the city.
