Lecture on osteoporosis, ors preventable life style diseases delivered

Jammu, May 7: To generate interest towards the problem of osteoporosis and other preventable life style diseases, BMD tests were conducted on medical students in Department of Preventive and Social Medicine (PSM) and a lecture was delivered for sensitising about the condition and preventive interventions.
A lecture was delivered by Assistant Professor Orthopaedics Dr Bias Dev and it was emphasised on the future doctors that since they are the ambassadors of health issues, they should come forward for raising awareness level in general public by talking the simple methods of prevention like adequate physical activities in form of using staircases, walking or cycling to office whereever possible, developing interest in sports , gardening and other.
He further emphasised that about one hour physical activity is desirable to have beneficial effects for health and prevent osteoporosis and other life style disease besides not falling prey to smoking and alcohol. The audience was motivated to work voluntarily in the vacations in their respective areas of influence and it was heartening to know that many of them had affirmed to be the volunteers in future.
"It is for the information of general public that osteoporosis is a silent epidemic with over half the population over fifty years affects with it and the best mode is to prevent it by having good bone stock by end of third decade of life after which the bone mass don't get accumulated and year by year starts getting lost, "he stated and adding that those persons who had accumulated good bone stock by 25 years by way of good physical activity and who maintains the physical activity are likely to stay healthy by avoiding the life style diseases and osteoporosis. Osteoporosis predisposes an individual to get fracture from small trauma and causes huge economic burden on individual family and society.
