Srinagar, May 7: The 700-year-old Mangleshwar Bhairav Asthapan, situated in old Srinagar according to its trustees was neglected by every successive regime who claimed that its reopening and restructuring was ensured due to the collective efforts of both Muslims and Pandits.
Mangleshwar Bhairav Asthapan, the momentous temple at Namchbal Fatehkadal in old city was thrown open for devotees after twenty six long years on the birth day of Lord Shiva last week. The temple which is located in the middle of Babademb canal according to its trustees was locked after Kashmiri Pandits exodus in 1990.
Maharaj Krishan Pandita, one of the trustees of Mangleahswar Bhairav Temple said that its restructuring was made possible only due to the collective efforts of both Kashmiri Pandits and Muslims while as the government didn't take any painstaking measures for its reconstruction.
"We are very much happy that we managed to reconstruct the temple which was closed for over twenty six years, it was reopened for devotees on the birth day of lord Shiva, in Kashmiri we call the day as 'Vyka Gatwach Paencxam'," Pandita told 'Early Times'.
He claimed that the government has never contributed in restructuring the temple nor was any effort made by any successive regime for its reopening.
"The temple which was dedicated to Lord Shiva 700 years ago was reconstructed by Samajik Vikas Sansthan, we are proud of our Muslim brethren who helped and encouraged us to reopen it, the temple which has its historic significance was otherwise surrounded by hedge plants and there was lot of dust and waste material accumulated in and around the temple before its reopening," he added. He said that the temple also suffered complete damage during September 2014 deluge however the government did not spent a single penny for its reconstruction.
"Kashmir has always remained an epitome of communal brotherhood our Muslim brethren who have been sharing our thick and thin encouraged us a lot and didn't let us felt insecure. We also performed Hawan and Puja Path in which hundreds of devotees from across the valley participated , it was really an emotional moment," he said.
He said that the temple will be open for devotees hereafter and the religious occasions will be celebrated the way Pandits were doing before 1990. "We appeal the present government and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to help us in restructuring the temple so that devotees do not feel any difficulty in future,'' said Pandita.
