BJP voted against revocation of 12.5 % service tax Katra Chopper service | | | Asif Iqbal Naik Early times Report
Srinagar June 3: The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) legislators today voted against the revocation of 12.5% service taxes moved by MLA Udhampur Pawan Gupta during cut motion when the hlouse was discussing grants of Finance Department. As per the details available with Early Times, Finance Minister Dr. Haseeb Drabu last year ordered imposition of 12.5 % Service Tax on the helicopter service operating from Katra to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi and since then refused to revoke the same. Today when Jammu and Kashmir Assembly discussed the grants of Finance Department, MLA Pawan Gupta moved four cut motions in the Assembly demanding amendment over various issues including against the imposition of 12.5% service tax on passengers traveling from Katra to Shri Mata Vaishno beside from Padder to Machail and Baltal to Holy cave of Shri Amarnath Ji. During the decision on the issue, Pawan Gupta demanded immediate revocation of the taxes imposed on pilgrims traveling to various religious places in commercial flights in the state including on helicopter service from Katra to Vaishno Devi. Though Pawan Gupta agreed to withdraw three other cut motions, but pressed for the voting of his cut motion to discuss the imposition of service tax @12.5% on commercial helicopter services operating in the state. After Gupta's refusal to withdraw the cut motion, Speaker Jammu and Kashmir Assembly decided to go for voice voting and during the course of the voting no one including BJP members did not support the cut motion on revocation of service taxes on commercial helicopter services operating at various religious places in the state of Jammu and Kashmir including Katra to Vaishno Devi. Pawan Gupta who was MoS Finance in Mufti Sayeed government when the service tax was imposed by the government had expressed his disgust with the Minister of Finance Haseeb Drabu for not taking him into loop while announcing imposition of service tax on pilgrims of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi undertaking helicopter services. "The Minister kept me in dark and has taken a unilateral decision which I am highly opposed to as MoS Finance," said Gupta Finance Ministry headed by Haseeb Drabu last year has issued an order imposing 12.5 per cent services tax on pilgrims of Mata Vaishno Devi ji shrine, travelling by the helicopter from Katra to Sanji Chat and back, prompting two helicopter companies Global Vectra and Himalayan Heli, the two air service providers for the pilgrims, to raise prices of the tickets. |
