| In Kashmir, Cong ignores suffering minorities | | Dubious stand on Sainik, Hindu colonies | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 6: A senior Congress leader has disappointed the minorities in Jammu and Kashmir and virtually rejected the demand of non-state subject ex-soldiers for establishment of Sainik Colony in the Valley.
It was expected that the Congress would say a word of sympathy for the minorities in the state and also conciliate the alienated ex-soldiers by saying that they were state subjects and it was their right to have colonies for them in Kashmir like they have colonies in other parts of the country. But they took an altogether a different line to appease anti-India, anti- Hindu and anti-army forces in the Valley for vote bank.
The Congress leader was in Kupwara on Sunday to address his party workers' convention. Instead of talking about the displaced Kashmiri Hindus and other suffering minorities in the state and taking a positive stand on the Sainik Colony demand, he chose to create a feeling of hatred among the Kashmiri Muslims by saying that the minorities, including Muslim minority, were not safe in India and that the Sainik Colony and Kashmiri Hindu townships should not be created in the Valley unilaterally.
"The spurt in militant attacks in J&K is the result of formation of RSS-led PDP-BJP Government in the state. The issues of Sainik Colonies and Pandit townships are sensitive and no decision should be taken unilaterally," he said. "Before taking any decision, all political parties, all stakeholders should be taken into confidence. Sensitivity of the issues has to be gauged," he further said.
By stakeholders, he obviously meant Hurriyat leadership and anti-Kashmiri Hindu civil society in Kashmir, who have been the demands of Kashmiri Hindus and non-state subject ex-soldiers for separate homeland, separate colonies and Sainik Colonies, saying these were the RSS-inspired demands and the whole objective behind these demands was to change the Kashmir's demography.
To further widen the already wide gulf between Kashmiri Muslims and the majority community in India, he said: "Even kitchens and refrigerators of Muslims are checked for beef under the present regime. Mohammad Akhlaq was lynched in Uttar Pradesh in broad daylight last year allegedly for keeping beef in his house. A Kashmiri trucker was burnt alive in Udhampur by miscreants last year. Minorities in the country are feeling immensely insecure…" He only added fuel to the anti-India fire in Kashmir.
The Congress leader should not have spoken what he spoke considering its adverse impact not only in Kashmir but also in Jammu and Ladakh, where the Congress party had some support-base. And by speaking what he spoke, he only proved that his heart only bleeds for Kashmiri separatists and Kashmiri fundamentalists and he and his party had no place whatsoever in their political scheme of things for the minorities in the state as well as non-state subject ex-soldiers.
What the leader said should not surprise the minorities in the state, as the Congress has two yardsticks for the minorities, one for the Muslim minority in the rest of the country and one for the minorities in Jammu and Kashmir. What should surprise the people, particularly the people of Jammu, all the more is the stony silence of Jammu-based Congress leaders. |
