US delegation in Pak to promote Indo-Pak ties | | | Washington has urged Islamabad to prevent its soil being used for attacking India and ensure that it mends fences with New Delhi in the interest of peace in the region. In fact after Prime Minister,Narendra Modi, had detailed discussion with the US President,Barack Obama, and addressed the US Congress amid thunderous applause for the tenor and tone of Modi's speech a new understanding has developed between the two nations,It is in this context that Obama has vowed to sustain cordial ties with India as he had found that India is not only sincere friend of the US but is a reliable friend because the goal was common. What is the goal ?The two sides have one goal to fight against terrorism and liberate the world from the menace of terror and in this connection the US banks on India's designs and strategy because India continues to be tormented and teased by prolonged spell of Pakistan sponsored insurgency in many parts of the country, especially in Jammu and Kashmir.Knowing that Pakistan's proximity with China has further increased following promotion of cordial ties between India and the US,Washington is still keen to befriend Pakistan so that it does not fall headlong into the lap of China. In order to remove certain misgivings and misunderstanding a high-level US delegation is in Pakistan amid tensions in bilateral ties after a recent American drone strike in Balochistan killed Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Mansour and strong concerns here over growing Indo-US strategic cooperation.Senior Director for Afghanistan and Pakistan at the US National Security Council Peter Lavoy and Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Olson are part of the delegation which will hold talks with civilian and military leaders."The agenda of the talks is open and several issues will be discussed including drone strikes, strategic and defence matters and reconciliation process in Afghanistan,.Pak-US ties have showed signs of strain recently due to differences over handling of peace issue in Afghanistan and US' growing defence ties with India, especially a blanket support for India's candidacy in the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).According to Prime Minister's Advisor on Foreign Affairs, Sartaj Aziz, growing US-India ties were creating strategic instability as Washington's support for Indian membership for the 48-nation NSG was discriminatory. Was growing China-Pak ties discriminatory for India ? Possibly Aziz has not given a thought to it.He needs to realise that since Pakistan's military and economic assistance has been coming from China and that too in abundance India has to find a supporters and that too among the super power nations so that it could depend on that nation in case of some emergency.Well India has the capacity to deal with any threat from Pakistan but it is not an easy task for India to counter any armed attack from China.India's economy is growing so is its defence mechansim growing and one cannot rule out the possibility when India is fully prepared to meet any challenge from China.Till then India has to show patience and avoid forging a nexus with the US which would dilute India's non-alignment policy.Welll non-alignment policy is not an easy matter to follow because of grouping among comity of nations. Non-alignment will force a nation to live in isolation which is not possible these days. |
