Several NC, Hurriyat supporters want both parties to jointly counter Govt | Is Double Umar accord in offing in Valley? | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jun 12: There are high chances this time of history repeating itself in Jammu and Kashmir's political landscape as some leaders of the opposition NC and the Huriyat led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq are holds back channel talks to formulate a joint strategy against the present BJP-PDP coalition. If both sides manage to enter into bonhomie, it would be 'Double Umar' after the double Farooq accord of 1983. In 1983 elections, Dr Farooq Abdullah and Mirwaiz Umar's father Moulvi Farooq joined hands to ensure NC's victory in Srinagar city. Sagar recently said nothing is impossible in politics when asked to comment on the possibility of a similar accord between Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the separatist leader, Mirwaiz Omar Farooq. Dr Farooq and Mirwaiz had had alliance against Congress's march into Kashmir. Both the leaders then asked people to foil Congress entry into the state. Ironically, after winning the polls, Dr Farooq entered into an alliance with the same Congress that for him was 'untouchable' during the poll rallies. However, the clock is ticking reverse at Nawa Subuh as well as at the Huriyat headquarters and this time it would be against the present government. Reports informed some leaders of both the parties are deliberately upon adopting a joint strategy to counter the government's move of establishing separate colonies for the migrant pandits and for the former solders. NC's former MLA from Srinagar who is close to the Mirwaiz family is on a forefront, striving to stich a common ground for both the parties. Furthermore, reports informed that some supporters of Mirwaiz too want to have a common ground on certain issues that according to them are undermining JK's special status. "Both NC as well as Awami Action Committee are the oldest political parties of Jammu and Kashmir. If they join hands for a certain cause why should it be objected?" asked one of the Mirwaiz's supporters. On the other hand, National Conference too seems to be waiting in wings for such a development. Last month on May 21, it was none other than the national conference that held a day long seminar in memory of Mirwaiz's father Molvi Farooq. Farooq was assassinated by unknown gunmen in his Nigeen residence on May 21, 1990. The national conference leaders already on record have expressed hope of witnessing double Umar after the double Farooq accord. "Our party even Omar Abdullah wants to bridge the gap between NC and Awami Action Committee. National Conference is keen to revive the 'Double Farooq Accord'. Time has come that we show united face to meet the challenges of our common foe who is Mufti Muhammad Sayeed," Omar Abdullah's uncle and NC's additional general secretary Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal said earlier. "History is witness to the fact that NC and ACC joined hands at least twice in past. There was Double Farooq Accord and even both the parties reached at consensus during Municipal elections when Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah was the Chief Minister," Kamaal stated on another occasion. Former Minister and NC's general secretary has already termed the accord as a historic measure to end hostilities. "Shaheed Mirwaiz was a tall and visionary religious scholar and political leader who was bestowed with academic scholarship, spirituality and political insight and was a staunch advocate of Muslim unity in the State." Sagar has on record said the 'Double Farooq' Accord was a historic decision to end all hostilities and animosity between supporters of NC and supporters of Mirwaiz family. |
