Kathua, June 12: Despite tall claims and huge allocation on promotion of ' Beti Bachao- Beti paradao' by union government in collaboration with state government , 19 inmates of Nari Niketan Kathua, a house for poor / orphan girls being run by Social welfare department are living in worse condition and are served unhygienic food . The inmates are also being harassed by food supplier/ District Social Welfare Officer Kathua.
Shockingly, the building is unsafe with damaged window panes, broken doors, worse sanitary condition, unhygienic Kitchen, defunct Fridge/coolers, leaking roof and damaged floor which speak volumes of misappropriation of government funds meant for these inmates.
Sumi Sharma & Sonia Verma, both inmates who have been living here for 10 years, said they have to live in worse condition due to unavailability of basic amenities in the house. They alleged that the warden and Surinder Kumar Distt Social welfare Officer and food supplier harass the inmates and hurl abuses at them.
Veena & Preeti Sharma, other inmates said they wanted to have vocational courses, uniforms, books, school bags, medical facilities, sports equipments etc but nothing has been provided despite of having funds for all these.
They added that inmates raised issues before warden but she herself is unable to provide facilities because social welfare officer doesn't provide funds to warden.
The inmates said Union government has launched ' Beti Bacahao- Beti Padao' scheme but Nari Niketan Kathua is example of its poor implementation. They appealed Prime Minister of India and J&K minister for social welfare to see the condition of inmates and provide appropriate facilities in the house.
When contacted, Warden, Kamlesh Kumari, accepted the sufferings of the inmates due to unavailability of basic requirement but informed that Distt social welfare officer is in the know of poor condition of the inmates.
She expressed concern that despite number of complaints against food supplier, no action has been taken against him. She appealed Social Welfare Officer to make a visit and realize the sufferings of inmates.
