Srinagar, June 19: An amount of Rs 749.94 lakh was spent in the last fiscal year on 2284 inmates, including 1819 under trials, lodged in 14 different prisons in Jammu and Kashmir, where there are no separate jails for women prisoners. However, women inmates are presently lodged in eight jails of the state in separate enclosures (blocks). Officials said that there are 14 jails functional in the state. In total, there are 2284 inmates, including 347 convicts, 1819 undertrial and 118 detainee lodged in these jails. They said the highest number of 177 convicts is lodged in Central Jail, Jammu KB followed by District Jail Poonch with 136 and District Jail Baramulla with 120 prisoners. Meanwhile, District Jail Anantnag and Kupwara have 100 convicts lodged. District Jail Jammu has the highest number of 247 under trials lodged followed by Central Jail Srinagar with 289 and District Jail Udhampur with 247 inmates. They said there are 32 detainee in Central Jail Jammu, KB while District Jail Kathua has 21 and Central Jail Srinagar has 11 such prisoners. They said as of now, there is no proposal for creation of a separate jail for women prisoners. "Women prisoners are presently lodged in eight jails of the state in separate enclosures (blocks). Only female watch and ward staff is deployed in the female block," they said. Meanwhile, various vocational training programmes are being imparted to the prisoners in different jails of the state. The training include, carpentry, cutting and tailoring, crewel embroidery, computer training, plumbing, candle making, house wiring, handloom, power-loom training, confectionary etc," they said. |
