Ahead of Anantnag by-poll, Congress toes separatists line | Raj Babbar questions separate colonies for KPs | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 19: After maintaining silence over the issue of re-settlement of migrant Kashmir Pandits in the Valley, Congress has toed the separatists line by opposing "separate townships" for KPs. Senior Congress leader Raj Babbar while addressing a rally in connection with by-polls in south Kashmir's Anantnag district questioned plans of settling Kashmri Pandits in separate colonies in the Valley. "Isn't this their Kashmir? Why will somebody make them live in separate colonies? Kashmir belongs to Pandits as much as it belongs to Muslims and Sikhs and people from any other religion," Babbar said. It's in place to mention here that since the day issue of setting up of separate colonies in the Valley for migrant Kashmir Pandits has come to fore Congress has maintained silence over the issue. A few Jammu based Congress leaders had supported the idea of separate townships for KPs initially but they without assigning any reason maintained distance from the move and didn't show any concern towards this burning issue, which touches the skin of thousands of Kashmiri Pandits, who were forced to leave the Valley in 1990. An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "It's high time for Jammu based leaders of the Congress party to clear their stand over the issue, as it's the base of the Congress party stands eroded in Jammu region." He said, "Congress only made tall promises with Kashmiri Pandits but failed to deliver. Despite sharing power for 12-years first with PDP and then with National Conference, party just gave false assurances to KPs and took no concrete steps to facilitate their return to Kashmir." He said, "It's shocking that a senior Congress leader visits Kashmir and announces that party opposes separate townships for Kashmiri Pandits. It seems out of power Congress has lost the plot and a few Kashmir centric leaders, who lost the 2014 assembly elections, are misleading the party high command and central leaders. They are putting words in the mouths of central leaders by asking them to toe the separatists line to appease them (separatists)." A Kashmir watcher said, "As its Jammu based Congress leaders are in soup as people don't trust them. By opposing separate townships for Pandits they would lose the support of migrant Kashmiri Pandits also. It's the question of the credibility of the Congress leaders in Jammu who not long ago were demanding a Hindu Chief Minister for Jammu and Kashmir." Top Congress leaders remained tight lipped over the statement of the actor turned politician Raj Babbar, while a few of them described Babbar opposing separate townships for Kashmiri Pandits as his personal opinion. "You should wait for the official statement rather than construing Raj Babbar's statement as the official stand of the Congress party," said a senior party leader. |
