Garbage pollutes water bodies, SMC in deep slumber | | | S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report
BARAMULLA, June 19: The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has failed to make a visible impact on the ground across north Kashmir. The main towns of Baramulla district including Sopore, Baramulla continue to be as filthy as ever, water bodies are stinking with sewage and many still defecate in the open. According to sources that, "Mounds of garbage are seen littering near river Jhelum in Sopore town with the Sopore Municipal Council (SMC) officials failing in dumping the waste generated in the town. The concerned authorities have failed to arrange a garbage dumping facility here, thus it has evoked widespread resentment among the locals as heaps of garbage are lying scattered across the town, especially on the river banks which has polluted the water bodies, sources told early times. Sources said that, "The solid waste including plastic bags and polythene including market, domestic and hospital garbage is being thrown on the roads and also on the river Jhelum. However local residents of the town said that, due to the foul smell emanating from the garbage heaps. Living at places surrounded with filth increases the health risk. "Tons of garbage is produced daily, while as authorities dump garbage at many places and then left it uncovered which increased health risk, as there is no permanent garbage disposal system in the town, said locals. Nazir Ahmad of Mahrajpora said thatm Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has failed to make a visible impact on the ground, while as the concerned department has also forget their responsibility to make awareness about the said scheme. We have demanded effective removal of the garbage and urged government to take immediate steps in that regard, but it seems that government is least bothered about the health conditions of people, adding there is no particular place for garbage disposal in the town, said Nazir. A group of locals said, the dumping ground for the town has been a long pending demand of the local residents. We were assured by the successive governments for garbage dumping site but there is no progress on ground. Earlier 95 Kanals of land were identified at Tulibal for waste dumping, however it is heard that government has shifted the dumping site to Aadipora against the wishes of the residents, they added. Pertinently dumping site in Sopore town was raked up in lower house of J&K Legislature on June 10. |
