Tainted' medico likely to head ailing SKIMS! | 2 top contenders face serious charges | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 19: Tall claims of the Peoples Democratic Party- and Bharatiya Janta Party alliance seem to be falling flat as a medico with "tainted service record" is likely to be appointed as the new Director of SK Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) here. Sources said the government is "seriously looking at selecting either of its two "top favorites" for the coveted post, but both have negatives to their share." While the selection committee headed by Chief Secretary B R Sharma concluded the 2-day interviews for the post of new Director on July 12 here, sources said hectic lobbying was on in the corridors of power over the selection process. Sources said ignoring the tainted service record of some of the applicants, who have been accused of corruption in the past, their names figure at the top of the list only because they enjoy influence in the corridors of power. There are two top influential contenders. Sources said one of the medicos, who has multiple cases including those of private practice registered against him, is being backed by a religious organization as "our candidate for the post." This religious outfit, believed to be in the good books of the ruling coalition, has already managed some of the prime posts for their favorites. "Their men have already been absorbed in the PSC while another one being backed by this religious organization was recently given the plum post at University of Kashmir. The post of Director SKIMS is supposed to be another blessing in their kitty," said a source privy to the deliberations between the government and the religious organization. Sources said while some in the government have told the outfit that their "interests will be considered", the selection committee is being asked to "ignore the cases of corruption and private practice" as already registered against this medico, who has worked with SKIMS. If this is government's concern towards a man backed by a religious outfit, there's equal scope for another "influential candidate." Backed by some influential hands, including ministers and advisors, this medico, apart from having served at SKIMS has worked outside. But he is accused of being "morally corrupt." "His stories of sexual exploitation still haunt the SKIMS and this can be confirmed… Why doesn't the government look into the service record of these favorites before giving them the top post," said a delegation of medicos from SKIMS. "If a morally corrupt man is appointed as the head of this institution, than only God can save SKIMS, which has already been marred by years of corruption and favoritism," they added. Sources said given the feelers about chances of favoritism in the selection of the new Director, SKIMS, Kashmiri medicos settled across the world have asked the government to "end years of favoritism." Sources said a group of leading medicos have passed on a message to Chief Minister's Advisor, Prof Amitabh Mattoo to use his good offices for the fair selection. "Ideally speaking, in the interest of this institution, a medico well-versed with SKIMS, having internationally reputed service record, whose contribution matters for the humanity would best fit the chair than anyone whose work in only confined to paperwork published by some medical journals …There needs to be a change for good, let the merit and integrity of the applicants speak," said a delegation of senior medicos looking ahead to "get the most eligible director." The post of Director SKIMS fell vacant on June 2, 2016, with the superannuation of Dr Showkat Ali Zargar. The government has given the charge of Director SKIMS to Secretary Health and Medical Education Department, MK Bhandari. Officials said Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, who also happens to be the chairperson of the SKIMS Governing Body would take te final call on the selection. Meanwhile, medical fraternity has appealed the Chief Minister to choose the "most deserving candidate on the basis of his merit and service record." "Otherwise, SKIMS would continue to decay, which was introduced by favoritism by the successive National Conference regimes," the medicos said. |
