Would PDP-BJP Govt act against politicians? | Land Grabbing Case | | Saqib Junaid Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 19: As politicians and other state functionaries in other parts of the country find themselves cornered over allegations of corruption and their tribe feels the heat of the growing anti-corruption movement, tainted politicians in Jammu and Kashmir continue to enjoy the privileges. Two former ministers and prominent hoteliers in Gulmarg and Patnitop tourist resorts have encroached upon forest land in Jammu and Kashmir, the government revealed in the Legislative Assembly on Friday last. In a written reply, the State Forest Ministry informed the House that an ex-minister was under illegal possession of 26.20 kanal forest land in south Kashmir's Shopian district. He was a minister in the previous NC-Congress regime. The Vigilance Organization Kashmir had also booked him on the land grab case. The investigation has established that the officials of the Revenue department had illegally made insertions, corrections and tempering in revenue records to confer undue benefit upon the ex-minister. A fictitious record was prepared to pave the way for him to encroach upon the forest land illegally. Earlier, many politicians during their rule faced such cases but no action was taken against them. In fact, all of them have prospered and gone on to occupy more responsible positions in the party. Last year, the Forest Department said that notices would be served to all encroachers, including a former chief minister, his younger brother and ex-minister, a former forest minister, the ex-Congress minister and many senior retired and serving bureaucrats and police officers but no action was taken against them. The Forest Ministry also revealed that seven business houses were in the list of encroachers. It is pertinent to mention here that 12030.49 hectares of demarcated forest land is presently under the illegal occupation of encroachers. This has put a big question mark on the capacity of the state government to tackle political corruption. One can hardly cite an example where anti-corruption bodies in the state have successfully pinned down the guilt of politicians or high profile bureaucrats. However, the big question for all remains will the PDP-BJP take any action against these land grabbers? Will there be any investigation in this case? Will investigation be taken to its logical conclusion? It seems unlikely as a politician or a high profile businessmen in the state have never gone to jail for indulging in corruption or in a land grabbing case. |
